Seismologists have been expecting something along these lines since the first quake occurred. It's common for a large quake to be followed by another relatively large one within a reasonably short time; when the fault line slips with the initial quake, it often gets snagged somewhere else, leading to a second quake as pressure builds up. From the preliminary reports I've heard, there were some casualities related to buildings collapsing, but the tsunami threat didn't amount to much. Let's hope that holds up.
