I want to say DooM but that game died years ago only to come back with DooM 3 which leaves a large gap between 2 and 3. On the other hand I think Descent 1 takes the lead. What do you think? This does not include free game like chess, poker, etc.
I can't think of any other 9-10 year old multiplayer game thats still being played other then D1. I'm sure others will pipe in and I'll stand corrected, but D1 is ultimately the best

I'd have to go with D1 as well. </b></font><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I don't think Doom necessarily died. Since the source code was released, there have been legions of people toying with the engine. Thus far, they've managed to incorporate gradual lighting effects (as in Descent), corridors under corridors, and several other things the original Doom couldn't do.
do people still actively play doom online? i'd say D1 is probably the best guess, but i wouldnt be surprise dif there was an older one. just because a game is old doesn't mean it isn't any good.
you are all wrong. even i was, kinda. although pong got played the most. this is why. earliest date i found for pong was 29.11.1972.
who doesn't believe it may investigate further, as i'm too lazy with my 56k.
Like Topher said, it's Nethack. It allows for limited user interaction through bones files, and the game has been continuously played since 1987. Its predecessors (Hack and Rogue) have been played since 1980 (source)
Though, I'm not sure when bones files were actually introduced...
