Unplugging the modem does nothing, its just a silly solution Comcast gives out because in their eyes there is nothing wrong on their end and automatically assumes that the consumer knows nothing (which for the most part I dont blame them considering there are people out there who dont need a computer in the first place!) or they are working on it and dont want to give out the real answer.
Tech support was not helpful, they gave me the same mantra of rebooting my setup. I have however noticed a speed improvement but not to the advertised 4 megs.
Comcast Internet users heads up.
I think your dead wrong, maybe power cycleing the modem didn't work for the problem you were having but in many instances that is the first place to start. I have had cable since it came out in my area and I can't count the # of times I've had to powercycle my modem.
Same goes for routers too.
Whats funny is 90% of the time the consumer is to dumb to try a simple reboot of the modem

My download speed and ping times are great. But the first time I try to visit a page, it spends a couple minutes trying to get the DNS entry, and fails half the time. Anybody want to post the IP address for a good backup DNS server?
What he said... Last night I lost DNS again, but everything else was fine. Getting 3900k+ down and 350k+ up just about like they said.

I found some public DNS servers:
205.166.226.38
216.87.84.209
64.151.103.120
via granitecanyon.com (which is the first IP listed there) and opennic.
There's another list:
199.166.28.10 (PS0.NS2.VRX.NET) - Atlanta, Ga
199.166.29.3 (nl.public.rootfix.net) - Nederlands
199.166.31.3 (NS1.QUASAR.NET) - Orlando, FL, USA
199.5.157.128 (ASLAN.OPEN-RSC.ORG) - Detroit, MI, USA
from http://support.open-rsc.org/.servers/
I had tons of problems using Comcast for surfing the web, but I could play D3 just fine through vortex. But once I put in those DNS servers, I could surf as well.

[Comcast 'Hell-Week' Makes Headlines
Washington Post BBR board mention
Comcast's week's worth of DNS outages (and your workaround and discussion in our forums) made the front-page of the Washington Post business section. Comcast now seems to admit that the problems were their own fault, and according to a spokesman, "We have put a fix in place to address our DNS issues and believe it to be a success." In the end, the outage was a perfect example to other ISPs of how not to keep your customers informed.]
