Playing D2X games via tracker

Post by Diedel »

Hi,

I don't know whether it has come to everybody's attention that D2X-W32 offers a UDP/IP connection mode via a tracker. Chose "start/join UDP/IP game via tracker" in the multiplayer menu to use that feature.

If a game host launches a game via tracker, its IP address and port are registered with any trackers specified in d2x.ini plus a hard-coded tracker in Germany that has been kindly provided by VEX-Munk from the German VEX Descent clan.

Every client that tries to join a game via tracker will request a list of available game hosts from the tracker(s), and the games offered by these hosts will be displayed in the game selection menu as usual.

This is the most convenient way to play multiplayer games with D2X-W32: You don't need KALI, and you don't need to enter IP addresses or port numbers. Although game hosts and clients can specify a port, they're not required to: If they don't, the standard port (28342) is used.

There's no dedicated servers with D2. A server is a player offering a game ("game host"). So you need to find someone who wants to play D2 when you want to, and one of you needs to be the game host and start udp/ip via tracker.

So we just need two computers to be on all the time as servers to make one...Anyone able to do that? You just need two windows computers that can run descent 2 (lol, thats pretty much any computer around these days). I can't because our dedicated internet host for our house is running Linux. Any two people just need to get together and do it though.
