The Descent BB

Post by Pun »

I joined this board in March of 2000. That doesn't exactly make me an old schooler, but I've been around a while. I visit many other boards with regularity, but they never feel the same as The Descent BB. I consider this place my home on the internet.

It's unique and unusual that so many of us are still here even though the game is on it's deathbed. It's almost as if we're some sort of dysfunctional family. I'm curious to know how many of you feel the same way about this board and might offer an opinion as to why this is so. What keeps us all here? What's unique about this board and why does it feel like home?

most of the people on this board have played a game together for 4-7 years... and the people who are still active in descent(and have been from the beggning) about 9 years.

I cant tell if thats a reason for being here, or not... just a thought.

Habit.
I think I like the older age range, I guess I can relate to the dbb in that way. Something Awful makes me laugh way harder for the most part but it is overwhelmingly early 20's types, which I have a hard time relating to sometimes.

I think for the most part it is habit.

I also consider this my home on the net. I don't really don't know why. I think it is the mix of people and the fact that we all have a common bond (the game itself). I like the broad age, education level, political, religious, and national diversity of the members.

As crazy as we all drive each other from time to time, I think dysfunctional family is a good parallel to what we have here.

Same as all the people above me posted.

Here I dont have to worry about exposure to "leet" speak, dumb anime like Pokemon (or any anime for that matter) or people who debate religion and politics as if they were 5 year olds. Or people who post one spam post after another and you kinda get lost in the thread as a result of it because the moderators suck. Spam is ok once in a while but not rampant (www.mektek.net/forums is an example. Go read it!)

The general maturity of the posts here is higher than in some other forums and I appreciate that. I also may be stuck to this place since this was the first forum i've been on since I first got on the internet in 99'.

It's my favorite Anti-Social gathering place, I can be a total ★■◆● on here and people actually like it! :D That and over the years since late 1998 I've spent a lot of time reading posts and getting to know various peoples internet personas here, so its just fun to drop by and post a few times a day.

Also coming up with a solution a tough computer problem in the Tech Forum always makes my day. It's the best internet Tech Forum there is, very few complete noob questions, lots of experienced and tech savvy people posting.

(Note: A noob question by my definition is more then just a totally retarded question, it generally involves bad grammar and no punctuation, something like: "my computer quit working after i deletes some files did i need them?")

my little bit...well all of the above, plus its easy on the eye and to navigate, no nasty popups, banners, those annoying little preview boxes, it has a sensible number of forum sections as well. could do with a bigger avatar size though :)

Lots of good points above ...

1) Tech forum is the best on the web for sure.
2) I am familiar with a lot of you guys and I like most of you, peculiarities and all. When I post at other forums, it is so impersonal ... I know nothing about those peeps.
3) This is a great place to vent, to share some cool jokes, and to just shoot the chit ... that wouldn't work if we knew nothing of each other.
4) I never figured out the gerbil thing and I am still waiting for someone to explain.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't spend much time at my computer any more. And most of the time I do spend there, is related to my studies or my business..

So yeah, the DBB and my BMW/rustbucket site are the only places I check daily for fun.

I like it. Not too many people, no spamming idiots, and I know everyone, which means I can actually keep up with the topics that I'm interested in without reading pages and pages of responses.

Plus there are some cool people that I really respect, and some people that make me laugh. Etc

Certainly the idiosynchrasies. Certainly the ability to argue and vent. Certianly the average IQ being well above par. The jokes are sometimes funny. But also the DBB provides a means just to spend the days.

Jebus; who the heck are you people anyways ..... :P

Actually, I came here and lurked for a while because of Descent. It may be a dying breed, but it's therapy for me - I don't have time to play a ton o' games, and Descent works for me conceptually. I stayed here and started posting because youse are all a bunch a interestin' folk. And this board is really easy on the eyes. And you were all really helpful and patient with my nube questions.

I will keep coming here because I know one day there will be another true iteration of Descent and I will be here for it. It is the most challenging video game ever made and I am glad I got to be part of it. I have actually met a great many of the people that post on this board in person....... I can't say that about any other internet site, not even the pornographic ones!!!! :P

P.S. That being said, I miss Gooberman...........

the DBB to me is the family table after dinner....

no matter what is said or discussed, when we leave and return the next day we are still the same screwball family.

But we are still unsure why we adopted jo-jo the circus boy!

When I first posted here I was just a lonely shy introvert. Now after all these years posting, I'm still lonely, shy and introverted...thanks a lot!

On a more serious note the idea of family is appropriate. Watching some of you like Hagan Daz grow up has been interesting. Hopefully when I'm in the old folks home some of you will come visit.

...D3 is Not on its death bed ..! (yet !) ..although I have my burial plot picked out in the backyard of Jay's D3 Retirement Home...

I play only Descent 3, no other game ... and I only post on this BB, here.. I'm mono-gameous...monoBBous.

For me the DBB is a habit, due to all the peeps who lurk and post, ... and freak out, ... like where's Ingus .?!... and technical support has been great..! Thanks to the likes of Mobius and more of you here and in game.. Planet Descent is my second resource base however...

With me, I can beat the crap out of people, act like a complete jerkoff, post some really inane or stupid stuff to get a laugh or at least a reaction, put in a halfassed opinion.. then come back the next day and still be part of a family as pun puts it.

losta <3 for you guys.
