I had the same thoughts. In the comparison to Half Life you completely ignored the finer points of a very well-written and executed game and knocked it simply because you couldnt move along the z-axis. Never mind the fact that Descent itself was just mindless killing and key hunting.
Multiplayer is a different story, of course, but again you ignore the strategy and skill needed in a game like CS or Team Fortress and knock it because... no z-axis.
The shooter genre has become WW2 shooters, modern tactical, and â??team based combatâ??. Battlefield 1942, Counterstrike Source, Day of Defeat, and Americaâ??s Army dominate gaming worldwide. The titles that stray from this team based formula are much less popular.
Then how do you explain the popularity of UT2004, Halo, and HL2DM? All of those have hugely popular non-team modes.
Also, it would help to drop the 15-year-old fanboy tone of it.
It should be known that the sole weapon of the Descent hater is evasive behavior. The same was true for the Half Life 2 thread. When asked to explain their comments or insults, there was not a single comeback. Not only was leaving rude and unappreciative, it was pitiful. Choosing to listen to bad songs like TOOLâ??s Prison Sex over Descent LAN play is simply unacceptable. Fact.
Unresponsive behavior is the most common resistance to the power of Descent.
And yeah, the Xbox bit doesnt need to be there. It has no relation to Descent. If you want to blame anyone, blame the game developers for dumbing down games for the consoles (e.g. Deus Ex: Invisible War).
