Midi Contoller
Midi Contoller
I'm seeing stuff for $49 like the Evolution eKeys and also stuff for $150 to $300. For basic input, does it really make that much difference to a novice that wants to make some basic drumbeats/basslines/rhythms to play guitar over?

That evolution keys thing looks like cheap plastic. I'd stay away from it. The oxygen looks well-built, but only two octaves?? Lol.
Ok, I'll admit I'm used to this for MIDI input, so I'm a little biased

An additional octave plus pads for drum inputting. Pads make a huge difference groove-wise, imo, over keys (too much travel in keys and far more logical layouts for kits). Happy tappy fingers. Also sliders+knobs instead of just knobs for mixing, tweaking sounds, etc. Makes it much more visual for shaping filters, ADSR, relative volumes, EQ'ing, effects levels, etc. Mmmmm, sliders. And, oh, a joystick for playing, well, Descent! Trichording While My Filter Gently Sweeps! Don't cut corners with half-features when it comes to producing original music. Good tools make good music gooder.

I use this. I think there's a smaller version as well.
I like it better than the Oxygen8, which my friend has. The Edirol has more functionality and precision.
