Has anyone here ever installed K-Lite codecs?

Ive been thinking of installing the K-Lite Codec Full package on my Windows 2000 machine so that my Media Player Classic can play vertually anything.

But I have heard that installing such packages can be dangerous, because they can interfere with existing codecs.

Anyone have any good experiences or horror stories about installing such codec packs?

I wouldn't recommend it. I tried one a long time ago, but later decided to uninstall it. The installer/uninstaller wasn't very smart and uninstalled all of the codecs regardless of whether they were previously present or not. I couldn't play Divx, mp3, etc. Pretty ridiculous.

The uninstaller is one of those things that I did hear about, causing problems.

But Ive also heard that the recent versions have improved upon the situation greatly.

Thats why Im considering it again.

I use the latest 6.4.8.4 version of Media Player Classic, with only the xvid 1.03, ffdshow, and the core vorbis audio codecs installed. Ffdshow is configured to play back h264 and divx only, xvid is configured to play only itself, core vorbis is only for ogm files with vorbis audio. I have the internal AVI splitter in MPC disabled, so far I have not encountered a file I could not play back.

Im still a bit a newb at video codecs. One of the things Ive been seeing alot more as of late, is that newer quicktime .mov files are not playing under MPC and its beginning to drive me buggy. Could you tell me, what in that list plays back mov's Krom?

Media Player Classic will play damn near any video file. You just either need the retail programs installed, or hunt for third-party plugins. (Kinda stupid that they have "Quicktime Alternative", which is just MPC and the plugins, but don't offer the plugins as a seperate download.)

That said, you might want to nab the Nemo codec pack. That has alot of the most commonly used video codecs in one package.

Ya MD, thats what my question is all about. I refuse to install the dam bloatware/spyware crap of Real, Apple and the latest WMPs.

Im using the latest and greatest MPC but there are still a few newer mov's that it chokes on.

BTW, one of the ones it chokes on is the pepcon.mov which is that famous video of the pepcon rocket fuel factory, exploding. I love watching stuff blow up big.

Hmmm, true I don't currently have real alternative and quicktime alternative installed, I just tend to avoid real media and quicktime files entirely whenever possible. And so far it seems to be very possible.

MD, when you're installing Quicktime and Real Alternative, they give you the option of whether or not to also install MPC. I use it myself for certain files (some AVI, MKV, OGG, etc.) that I can't hack Winamp into handling. It's a nice little player; I'm amazed that it's self-contained in a single .exe file. I just wish I could get the Quicktime plugin (either through the Alternative or the actual player) to work right in Firefox; the damn thing never seems to be able to play some embedded content.

I realize that Top, but its still moronic to make you redownload MPC when all you want is the stupid plugin. You can download the realplayer plugin seperately, so why not the quicktime one?

I just installed Quicktime alternative and now the pepcon.mov file plays just fine in MPC.
