This seems to be a recurring problem with Skype. I've had it happen to me more times than i can remember. I usually can tell when it's coming because the other party fades out.
Unfortunately I don't know of any other PC VoIP applications out there. There used to be quite a few out there, like IParty for example.

Pity intel dropped that program though. It has its issues, but is extremely simplistic and easy for even the most novice user to use. The hardest thing for them would be editing the client.ipl in notepad to create a unique nickname. (Aren't you people glad I introduced it to kali? )
