I recommend you read it (or watch the original movie... or the new one). Then the whale will make perfect sense. We're not going to spoil it for you, besides, it works best "in context".

The movie was good, but only goes so far. Doesn't cover all the weird stuff, like uh ... the reason for the towel thing ... the Total Perspective Vortex or whatever it was called... who Zarquod actually WAS...

Yeah. Oh, and forgive me if I typoed that - I haven't actually read the books myself, just heard a LOT about them from those who have...
