could a weapon spawn a generic object?

Yeah, it can be done. Under flags in the weapon's gam page, check Spawns Robot. Then close the flags branch, and look for the 'Robot Spawn:' Field. I've never tested it for spawing anything other than a robot, but i'd say its a safe bet it will work for any Object.
And on a side note, in case you haven't heard, you don't have to name a weapon's gam page after one of the original game's weapons. I had tested it successfully which verified Gameedit's theory. You can name it anything you want, nd just set that name under the ship/robot's weapons slots area. Gunpoint Weapons/ Weapon index it an obsolete field, and is not necessary. It saves time and makes things easier.
