Wireless card and router

I have a Toshiba laptop w/ an 802.11bg internal card.

Where does this fit in the different cards like the "b's", "g's", etc?

If I buy a new router is there some that won't work w/ my card?

802.11b = 11Mb/s
802.11g = 54Mb/s

These are theoretical maximums. On a b network you are unlikely to see better than 5Mb/s and on a g network 10-20Mb/s is good throughput.

In general, all devices are backwards compatible. So get yourself an 802.11g Access Point. If you already have a router/firewall, then simply configure it as an access point and not a router.

Make sure you implement MAC filtering for allowed devices, and set up WEP too.

I use Verizon DSL and have a Westell 327W
router/modem.

If you have a wireless router, he means.

It sounds like you don't have one. So you'd need a wireless router in order to use the wireless.

Also, yours is just a fancy way of saying its a g. G works with G and B. B only works with G. So yes it is comparable.

You card can do either Wireless B or Wireless G. G is the faster of the 2.

You are better off buying a router that supports G since it will by default support B also.
