Anyhow, the span of the web was huge. The 'sweet spot' was only about a foot in diameter though. This is one ugly friggin spider. What you have there is a member of the family of Giant Crab Spiders. (Heteropodidae) They are mostly tropical spiders that hold their two-clawed legs crablike. They're larger than Crab Spiders, and have teeth on their jaws. There are about 700 different species of Giant Crab Spiders.
The Banana spider is also known as the Huntsman spider. (Heteropoda venatoria), It is found around the world in tropical regions where it is welcomed in most houses because it eats cockroaches. The spiders hide in crevices during the day and come out in the evening. The females carry their egg sacks with their jaws. These spiders are found in the southern United States and are commonly imported with bananas, hence the name.
