Why own firearms
There is a segment of our population that thinks owning a firearm is akin to being a pedeophile or worse. This may make those of that persuasion think a bit differently:
A Texas woman who runs a Web site called Polimom.com served as a link between those who stayed and those who had left. With her help, they stockpiled an arsenal of shotguns, derringer pistols and an old AK-47.
They were put to use the next day.
"Some looters came up and pulled a gun on the wrong group of men," said Harris, who said he did not fire a gun himself and declined to say who else was involved in the battle.
"Two men were shot right there," Harris said, pointing down the street as he watered his rose bushes. "One was shot in the back, the other in the leg, and the third I was told made it a block and a half before he died in the street. I did not go down to see the body."
The next day a nearby stockpile of chemicals exploded, shaking the houses and sending a fireball 300 feet into the sky. The fire burned for another three days, Harris said.
"For five days we didn't need FEMA, the Red Cross or the National Guard," Harris said. "The neighborhood took care of itself."

<<proud member of whole family of gun owners.
We hunt with them
well a few of us actually prefer flicking high velocity sticks at game animals, but we still occaisionally grab our guns for a hunt with friends.
We collect them.
We all have our collection of our favorite guns from the past.
We protect our family and friends with them.
It is well known around here that most everyone in the nieghborhood has guns and wouldnt hesitate to use them to protect our family and friends if need be.(now that doesnt mean we're a bunch of gun toting rednecks that would shoot a tresspasser on site, but I guarantee you if you break into our homes you WILL be staring at a business end of a high power weapon. How you leave our home is then entirely up to you. we are happy to assist you in anyway possible).
The right to own guns was is a well fought for right here in the US and I for one will support that fight as long as I live.

I'm getting quite cynical lately, right now I'd say most ppl think that nothing is easier than to replace a human live.. If I wouldn't have a gun when one of the nice people that can be found around here breaks into my house while I'm at home I would wind up dead w/ a probability of 95+%. Neighbors are 10min away, cops 20. Do I keep my gun ? Hell, yes !!Mobius wrote:Protecting property is not a reason to kill someone. Property is easily replaceable, whereas human lives are not.

Hmmm. Multiple dead... chemical fire... I'm not so sure I'd want to live in that particular neighborhood.woodchip wrote:..."The neighborhood took care of itself." © Reuters 2005. All Rights Reserved. http://tinyurl.com/ayfk8

What part of what happened here do you non shoot to kill types understand? Someone pulls a gun on me and given the chance I will not hesitate to shoot them. Some of you here I am afraid would have become one of the floating corpses with bullet holes puckering your body.

If you're good enough with a gun (and you should learn, even if you don't think you'll ever need to use the skill) shoot the idiot's kneecap instead of his torso.
He's alive, but incapable of moving anywhere until undergoing major reconstructive surgery. Plus, you don't need a super-powered gun to do it--a .22 will do the job if you hit the right place, and there's less risk of killing the idjit if he ducks. Personally, though, I still prefer my blowgun and steel rods.
Shooting his gun will also work if you get the heck out of the way as soon as you let off your shot--you do NOT want the impact triggering his gun to fire and shoot you or anyone behind you though.

If you know what you are doing you shoot for center of mass...period. Under stress of the moment you are looking to die if you try the above.Stryker wrote:If you're good enough with a gun (and you should learn, even if you don't think you'll ever need to use the skill) shoot the idiot's kneecap instead of his torso.

You'd have to be one cool customer to keep that kind of targeting ability under a high stress occurance such as a break in. (I.E. trained by military,or some similar agency).
Center mass is always the best strategy when protecting ones own in that situation.

If someone points the business end of a device expressly designed to kill at a distance towards me or my loved ones, my assumption is that they intend to use it. At that point the adrenaline kicks in. I don't know about you but my hands shake a bit under those circumstances, and I WANT TO LIVE.
Firearms are not toys.

You're onto something goob..I think it might be easier than trying to shoot someone's kneecap under stress. Kneecap? You're kidding me,Stryker! Go run a mile and then grab a firearm and see if you can hit something the size of a kneecap with your heart pounding and an increased breathing rate.. Then try to factor in adrenaline. You all have it wrong, you need to shoot in the corner and have it double richache and hit him in the back, that way he will think the threat is behind him.
Too much T.V.
Silver.. that's all you got? I'll un-roll my firearm penis for ya.

Not much of a gun person, my dad sure is though. He does the whole hunting/safari thing all the time. Never really was into it. Only guns I've thought were fun to fire would be the muzzle loader, which nearly broke my shoulder, and the M1 Garand...those are real guns.
I dont' carry a gun, only thing in my car is a 34" louisville slugger that would love to be swung at someone. Would hate to use it though, violence can be avoided, stay out of bad neighborhoods, and ummm..lock you doors at night. Pretty simple methinks.

Sarge/Silver, I can only use one at a time, help is always welcome.
unfortunately it's not simple. What about when the bad neighborhood comes to you, finds your doors locked and comes in through a window?
It would be great if the bad guys stayed on their side of the tracks and only robbed other bad guys.

unfortunatly, I can't own firearms now(long story) but I sure played with 'em alot when I was a young man and I was always taught to shoot first and ask for second helpings..........
which reminds me...SilverFJ did you not mention on these boards something about you going to prison for some length of time? if in fact you did...that means your prolly in jeopardy of going back, being in possession of all those guns...(well, unless your crimes were non-violent mis-demeanors or the guns are phony or you didnt go to prison at all ).

I hope these so-called "defenders" end up spending a very long time in jail.
If someone breaks in, as far as I'm concerned their life is forfeit and I will not hesitate to use deadly force to protect those I care for.

I don't know what I would do, how I'd react to having an intruder in my house. I like to think I would give the burglar a chance to flee... Ultimately however, you invade my home, you take your life into your own hands. I'm going to be scared and angry. And I own a gun.

The problem with a intruder is you do not know his intent. You don't know if he is armed (especially at night) or if he is high on drugs. You do not know if he is wearing body armor of some sort. What you do know is the intruder is not a girl scout looking to sell cookies. The old adage "shoot first, ask questions later" is very appropriate here. So what do you do?
If you can see no visible weapon, yell, "Halt or I will shoot". Intruder then has a choice to stop, leave (don't shoot the guy in the back as he trys to exit the house!)or advance. If he advances start pulling the trigger. Don't stop until the guy goes down! If the first couple of shots to the chest area don't slow him down, then start going for the head.
Prior to all this go out and shoot your primary defensive weapon on a regular basis. Better yet see if there is a shooting league at a local firing range that you can join up with. Bottom line...don't give the intruder a chance to take your life.

Barry, that's an astonishing collection you have.
Something I neglected to add earlier: I was involved in a home invasion. Two baddies smash in the door. One had what looked like a revolver (really chomed out so I think it was a toy), and the other had a single-barrel shotgun, which I got a good look at from the business end. The guy must have had it three feet from my face. It felt like time had frozen for me. We were forced into the bathroom while they ransacked the place. Luckily they just took the small expensive stuff. I can still remember the leader screaming: 'where are the drugs? WHERE ARE THE FKING DRUGS?'.
The cops didn't show up until a half hour later.
Now, had I had a firearm, things would have been different.
