The new DBB feature appreciation thread.

Post by Tetrad »

Okay what do we have here

"View Posts Since Last Visit". Whether you come every hour or every week, you can get all the posts that are new on a single page instead of having to go forum by forum.

Remote last visit time. I visit the DBB on up to 4 different machines at any given point in time. On the old DBB it would show new posts depending on when I last was at the DBB on that particular machine. Now it just is when I was last logged in no matter where I am, so it's much more convenient for me.

PMs. So when you want to say something to somebody in private, you don't have to resort to e-mail.

No more NHB password typing in. Once you're in it looks exactly the same as a normal forum.

Spoiler tags. For example, in Cowboy Bebop, [spoiler]spike dies[/spoiler]. Useful for when somebody's talking about movies.

And of course the usual better administrative tools.

Was there much problem installing the modification for the spoiler tags? The hack I see is for 2.0.4, but this is 2.0.6 I believe.

I'm in a similar situation, and a 2.0.3 hack already blew up at me =P so I'm wary of trying to install hacks for older versions.

Well it was a simple bbcode modification, so no.

DBB feature appreciation...

Post by Lothar »

I'm very happy with the "read from anywhere and keep your last-read settings" feature. I'd taken to just ignoring the cookies on the DBB, because I typically read from at least 2 computers each day.

I also like the private messages, and the ability to shut off certain annoying settings on your own.

Also, the complete memberlist is neat. Good for looking to see if any of your old aliases are still active.

The spoiler tags are nice, too.

I also like the possibility of making invisible forums. On another board I frequent, we have an entire "staff discussion" forum that's hidden from the outside (easier than e-mail, and lets us track things better) as well as a "secret" forum where we move controversial posts so that we have an archive of exactly what was said in case someone tries to cry "oppression". It seems both of those might be useful on this board, and being able to create a new private forum with strictly regulated membership is really nice (for example, if someone's in a custody battle and wants advice but doesn't want opposing lawyers to be able to get to it.)

I'm not very happy with HTML being "off" (I'm sure it's set to "on" in my profile), though. Is that intentional?

Also, the intermittent-503 feature needs to be modified somehow ;) This is my fourth attempt to post this reply...

That doesn't make any sense since [spoiler]the reason spike DOESN'T die thoughout the series is that Vicious is the only guy that can kill Spike. And yes, the movie was set a couple of episodes before the end of the series.[/spoiler]

I'm sure it is intentional.

HTML is, simply put, a security/annoyance risk (just like remote avatars, but that's not "fixed" yet so I didn't list it). If I were running the board there is nothing in HTML I would allow that can't be done with BBcode.

HTML has a wider range of uses and for those of us who have been doing it for years it is a lot easier then having to go out of the way (although not THAT much, but still annoyingly enough so) to do something that would otherwise be that much quicker to do. :x

I know dude. I've used HTML for years, which is exactly why I'm against enabling it. If I wanted to be malicious there is so much stuff I could do. But it really doesn't take any more time to use URL instead of A HREF or IMG instead of IMG SRC.

Last I looked, phpBB permits you to limit which HTML tags can be used if you choose to turn HTML on. But I don't see a point in turning it on.

HTML activation?

Post by Lothar »

perhaps because, among other things, I'll often post something like a movie review on multiple forums of different types, and it's much easier if I don't have to reformat it and modify the code for each forum. HTML is standard; *BB code is not.

It might as well be. VBB, UBB, PHPbb, and Invision Board all support url and img bracket codes.

I like the "Last Post" column in the forum view page. Don't care about anything else.

Yea, when it comes to free, open source forums, phpbb and snitz seem to be the two popular ones.

vBulletin also supports [url] and [img]. I think those two are standard tags for BBcodes, the others are up in the air.

Solution: Get a real browser. :) IE = non-standard compliant. IE is the only browser that I'm aware of that won't read the CSS template properly, thus resulting in your "problem".

It works fine in Mozilla Firefox. Maybe something's wrong with your browser? (I refuse to open IE anymore)

As in; its too easy to accidentally move your mouse over it. It works fine for larger messages, because even if you move your mouse over it quickly you cant read it in time, but when it's two words...

Anyway, meh. Its probably mostly my fault.

I kind of had a feeling / was guessing that that would happen anyway, no big loss.
