D2 ... Should I or Should I Not ...

Post by Iceman »

... I have a never opened shrink wrapped copy of D1 and D2 that have been in my closet for years ...

I thought (probably a silly thought) that they might become collectors items some day but I think now that Descent is just gonna fade into history.

Anyhow, it seems that this D2X thingy requires an original installed copy of D2 in order to operate. I have been intrigued about D2 for years but have never played it.

So ... Should I open the D2 or not?

Open it. :)

Hell, I still have the boxes for D1, D2 Infinite Abyss (gave the original to my cousin), D3 and D3 Merc. I also have the original boxes for a few other games. They may be worthless now, but in 50 years....

I doubt anyone will ever pay any good money for it, and you're missing out by leaving it unopened. I wish I still had my Definitive Collection box, but I'm much more concerned about still having the games in playable condition. :)

Keep it pristine man.

Opening up that box is only going to make you cringe. Looking at D2 is going to seriously assault you eyes - it's not worth ruining those great memories you have of D2.... Your memory is clouded: you remember D2 being this awesome game. But, if you open it, you'll be confronted with a reality that does not conform to your memory.

Best to keep it on the shelf, in the (vain?) hope one day it'll be worth something on ebay.

Hmmm that D2x does have some perty visuals... the pixelated D1 and D2 origional graphics will assault you, but you will be playing with 3DFX type effects when you patch to D2X.

Open the dang thing and play D2... it will teach you better tactics.

*whistles* Yeah, Mobius has a point; I like Descent 2 quite a bit myself, and I must say most people would be mortified when they saw what it really looked like (especially without high-resolution or anti-aliasing).

But then again, it's another one of those games that you don't play for the graphics. Sure, it's not Doom or Wolf3D (in all their 320x200 glory), but it isn't very pretty either, and is rather hard to make that way.

It's like, say, Chrono Trigger or Super Metroid. People play it because of the game, not the graphics (although I have to admit CT/SM -may- be better-looking).

If you're really stuck, go download the thing off the 'net and leave the box on the shelf. ;) You still bought it, after all. :)

Edit: Oh, and ... yeah, whether it becomes a rather over-valued classic is tough to call. Freespace 2 sure did, and quite quickly - because people found it and realised it kicked ass well after the production cycle was over and Interplay hit the doldrums.

Memories also come back of the Clan/IS Mech Paks for Mechwarrior 4. They weren't exactly awesome, or anything, but as an expansion they have been in somewhat steady demand, and are now well out of print. While they sold for something like US$20 each when they came out, you're lucky to get a copy now for less than $100.

Unless you're the collector type, open it.

It's basically a question of potential money vs. potential enjoyment - and with all the new features and graphic enhancements via D2X-W32, it's well worth going back to see.

[Edit] Then again, your best option would be to leave that box pristine, and find another copy of the game (for playing purposes) somewhere.

Behemoth: Only if demand far outstrips supply.

Currently there is little demand for Descent 1/2 (or 3 for that matter). I kind of expect it to stay this way unless something radical happens.

Did you forget about core decision?, for all we know they could refer players to descent as another game in the genre its placed in.

Gameplay >>> Graphics. D1/2's graphics do not detract at all from them being awesome games. And besides, Iceman says he's never played D1 or D2 before, and I'm sure he's well aware that they won't have the shiny graphics of today's games, or even of D3, for that matter.

Iceman, I guess the point that's being made is, whether you open the box or download a copy of the games, just play them ASAP :)

Open it, but somehow I doubt you will...

And yea it probably won't be as cool if you don't have some sort of nostalgia tie to it.

If you're really stuck on what to do or want to leave it unopened, then just find a second copy on eBay for cheap. D2 is too great of a game to not play.
