I'm using google satellite to view property that I am looking at buying. Trouble is the resolution isn't very good even for 10 acres. So is there a better freebie available?

I don't think that satellite images offered to the public or the ones viewed for free have the resolution you are looking for.

I have never paid for an image because they are expensive so I am not sure if the resolution is any better.

I have found aerial images taken from planes that are much better because of the lower altitude for the photo.

Try USGS resources and sometimes searching State websites you will come across these images.

Download 250MB of Nasa WORLDWIND.

Select "USGS 1-Metre" data set.

Zoom in on your intended purchase.

Wait for 1-metre resolution data set to download. (For a 10-acre site? Maybe a few megs - no more)

Voila.

P.S. USGS data @ 1-metre is black and white. Not colour.

i'm not sure what you mean by google satelite.

there's google MAPS
and there's google EARTH

google EARTH is a 10meg or so download, but it offers slightly better resolution than google MAPS. Also there is a plugin for google-maps that plugs in the ultra high res black and white USGS data that mobius is talking about.

i'll have a look for you and post a link to the plugin when i find it. (feel the love)

after downloading it select "USGS Ortho 1 meter" from within it.

google earth is all in colour, and i think around most citys the resolution is 1foot.
google MAPS has exactly the same texture data, but at about half the resolution of Google EARTH.

the USGS is Black and White, and it's resolution is a third of Google EARTH's highres data (so that's 1 meter resolution). However it has this 1 meter resolution B&W data for the entire USA - which means it has a slight advantage over google EARTH if you are unfortuantely looking at a place that google EARTH only has LOWRES colour data for (the LOWRES data is something like a 20th the resolution of the HIGHRES data, it's pretty bad. The USGS B&W data is basically be 6X the resolution of the googleEARTH LOWRES data).

woody if you want you could PM or IM me with where you want to look at (Latitude and Longitude would be handy), i can tell you the highest resolution image you can get.

(note: all figures are round about estimates)

they have a few pay versions, but they just add some usability features. All the versions use the SAME texture data though, incl the free version.

Thanks guys. Roidy the Terra server was just perfect. I can zoom in and see all the detail I need.
