Actually Jackson was going to do The Hobbit first but the lawyers were arguing over rights back then.

Now that the trilogy made so much money I imagine the lawyers hired bigger lawyers who hired bigger lawyers...

I hope they stick to the style that Tolkien used. Making "The Hobbit" really serious would just serve to ruin the story, if you ask me. The Lord of the Rings was a serious trilogy, "The Hobbit" was a playful childs book, I hope Jackson does his best to reflect that difference in the film.

YAY!!!

I dunno I trust that whatever Jackson does, serious or funny, will be good.

Now what about Simarilion? (is that spelled right?)

The Hobbit was not a playful Childs book. There are parts of it where the moments are joyful, as there are in LOTR, but once the journey begins those moments are fleeting. Let us not forget that the story deals with a lot of strife, danger, corruption, greed, war & death before the tale is finished.

I think Peter Jackson is the only one who could do it justice now that the Trilogy is finished. As long as Ian McKellen is Gandalf and Ian Holm reprises his role as Bilbo Baggins it should be all good :)

Hobbit...

the Hobbit had some serious moments, but it was still a children's book. JRR Tolkien says as much in the intro to both Hobbit and LotR.

My point was there are times for it to be funny and light hearted and then there are times where it is gloomy and serious and Peter Jackson will portray that just as he did with LOTR.

The Hobbit is most certainly not a comedy though.

but will Ian Holms be still young enough looking to play the part? Because they had to stretch his face back just for that one scene in the first movie. I doubt that's comfortable.

The Silmarillion could be epic, that I would like to see made.

The Silmarillion isn't as coherent of a story as either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. In fact, it's more of an historical epic than a single story. It includes many substories and characters over several hundred years. It is a truly amazing work, but I don't think there's any way it could be compacted into an effective movie. The Hobbit, on the other hand.../me drools :P

I concur, I don't know if he would be able to play the part, nor would I be too disappointed if he didn't. Ian McKellen would have to be Gandolf though. :)
