The gigapixel camera is here...

Post by Repo Man »

...OK, so you need a van to haul one, but we got 'em.

Gigapxl Project

The Image Gallery is amazing. At first I thought, 'So what?' But then, when I realized that what I thought were close up or zoom lens shots were actually details of a single image, I thought 'Whoa dude!' :o

This makes me wonder just how high the resolution is nowadays on the classified cameras used in the latest spy satellites.

Incidentally, a four billion pixel, uncompressed, 16-bit per component image is a 24 gigabyte data file. Moving, copying, editing, processing, and printing files of this scale strains the boundaries of even the most robust image processing tools. Having accomplished such tasks for more than one hundred images certainly makes us feel that we are digital photographers even though we use film in the camera.

Megapixels, cudos to the marketing dork that came up with using the number of pixels in an image to sell something rather than the resolution size of the image that most people understand.

People go, oooo 5 megapixels, wow!
Most don't realize that a 1600x1200 image is 1.9megapixels Most consumers don't need images bigger than that! 2560x2048 is 5.24 megapixels...

A gigapixel?
65,535x16,384 = 1.073 Gigapixels.

Utterly ridiculous.

Capm: yes ... most people don't need that high of a resolution... unless you are big into photo editing, clarity, and DETAIL. an 8 mpx slr sllows for photographers to do some great things in term of post photo production. but solid optics + good ccd = good picture all around. obviously, though, 'the biggger the better' im terms of detail.

i like having a camera where i can zoon in on the shopping list on the counter and read what it says!!! :D this camera would let me zoom into the pores of the rock surface and analyze the microbacteria from across the room.

did you look at the pics on their site... this isn't a marketed camera, its a very well refined film to digital camera that has incredible detail.

amazing to look at the pictures and see where they just brought the resolution up to scale and there is all sorts of detail there.

do i need this camera? HEYL NAW! but the applications are pretty intriguing, and it's a good step toward other ends. :)

i don't think Repo was really saying we need to run out and buy these things, but that it's just damned neat. :)

oh ... and can i slap you for the 'people understand resolution not megapixel comment'

i have sold many cameras... MOST PEOPLE don't get resolution, megapixels, or digital media at all. i think megapixel ratings actually helps to get the 'layperson' to understand what they are looking at a little better.

signs usually read: x megapixel = good print @ X" x X" = X x X digital pixel resolution = x mb per photo = x photos per x card....

it seems easier to say "get our two megapixel digital camera" than "buy our new one thousand six hundred by one thousand two hundered pixel resolution digital camera!"

I wasn't saying its a bad thing, I just thought the marketing technique was funny. If I buy a camera, do I need 5megapixels? no. Amd I going to get a 5megapixel camera? yes. Do I think a Gigapixel is too much? Not if you're a nerd or geek (like most of us probably are). ;)

I was just saying, why don't they just use the resolution size? Do I *really* need to know how many pixels are in a 1600x1200 image?
