Duper ... umm have you tried rasterizing the text layer... or just ctrl-click the layer ... and had the gradient as an overlay on a new layer. or IIRC in 7 you could use the blending options to add a gradient to 'un-rasterized' text... actually i can think about 8 different ways to add a gradient to text in ps7...
i like the first on a litle better. (and not just cause of the beveling) try a spherical gradient and pull it OUT to get a REALLY even grad on the bottom of the text.
also... (and this works best if you use a tablet) but you can also forgo the gradient and just airbrush it. gives a more natural look, and you can really get the color where you want it.
the spacing on your D is a little open in the middle there... bottom of it should be fatter. spacing on the E betweek the bottom and middle 'tines' looks a little wide... BUT PHENOMONALLY better than the original!

Thanks! The letter, I can do nothing about. It's the font. The font is also screwy. Some tabs and protrutions that are just kinda nasty,
Here is what I'm workin on...
It's getting late, so I'll tweek this tomarrow, but I think I'll ditch the bevel as that's only 2 pixels and looks funcky. That's about the size it will be too... that's also about 35 px font size. I could try something a bit higher like 80 or 100 then reduce the pix size. Although, I'm afraid that it will fubar during the sharpening. ....hrm.. tomarrow.
ya know.. I just noticed that the old Descent logo looks a LOT like the Doom logo. The lighting is a bit spherical. I can't get the bevel to work right. :\ so I'll fudge it. At the size it will be at, I don't think that many will notice.. if it's used at all.
