Harry Potter
Harry Potter
Being bored a couple of weeks ago with nothing to read I discovered my daughters Harry Potter books. So I read 1 - 5. Thought they'd be dumb but wound up enjoying them. Just bought a new Toshiba T.v. so I thought I'd get the video from the first book. So tonight it is Harry Potter and The Socerer's Stone ala DVD.
i read to my kids everynight, we are actually working our way through the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe right now (cause they saw the movie and just HAVE to read the book too). i have considered doing the potter books with them (and with the movies, they have BEGGED me to read them), but have not been too sure, especially since the further into the series you go, the more ludacrously over sized they become.
would you, or anyone here be able to say whether it would be appropriate for my youngins' (they are almost 4 and almost 6). i have thought about maybe just doing the first few.
i am glad someone over 10 recommends them as good, cause i have thought about reading them myself. maybe when i get done with the novel i am reading now, i will do that and decide for myself.

My wife is nearly blind, thanks to diabetes so we listen to the audio books. They're great. Jim Dale does different voices for all the characters. It's a lot of fun. alsmost as good as going to a movie with your eyes closed! Seriously though. they are good. I'd post a clip but we have the tape set, not the CD which are more expensive and a LOT more of them per book.

I did that with my oldest when she was around 4 or 5...the tears when Aslan was killed..phew!fyrephlie wrote: we are actually working our way through the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe right now
I read reviews of Harry Potter (the book) and found myself subconsciously being swayed by the literati; who slate Rowlings' love of the adverb and cliche. After a enjoying a couple of the films i picked up one of the books (number three i think) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Naughty Flabby.
well we read the hobbit when my oldest turned four, they loved it, and have since read many other books together, as a matter of fact, i think its time to go read another chapter right now.Flabby Chick wrote:I did that with my oldest when she was around 4 or 5...the tears when Aslan was killed..phew!fyrephlie wrote: we are actually working our way through the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe right now

If I were a pagan, I wouldn't consider Harry Potter stories anything to be appraised.

The Potter books are fun, I own all of them so far.
I don't think they quite deserve the hype they have gotten. They are good, but I wouldn't have put them at the top of the list. They don't even come close to the depth of the Chronicles of Narnia.
What I find amusing is all the Right Wing Christian crowd (Of which I consider myself a member), shouting about how the Potter books are teaching witchcraft and Satanisim. <sigh> Harry Potter has Christmas without Christ, Holloween without Satan, and Ghosts without an after life. The worst thing in the universe is a bad man, the best thing in the universe is a good man. The philosophy is miles away from spiritualisim, it is obviously humanist.
Which I can handle, I don't mind being exposed to other peoples philosophies as long as they try to stick within certain basics of natural law and ethics, which Rowlings does (at least so far). But it's just funny that all you have to do is mention the word "spell" or "witch" and it pushes the a certain crowds buttons and they get so caught up in it that they actually MISS the REAL content, which they also find offensive.

Mobius, if they condensed the movies any further, you'd loose even more content. They already have to dump alot of content and re-write it a little to make it fit into a given timeslot.
Furthermore, I never once saw you complain about the length of the Lord of the Rings films, and they had to do the same thing with that trilogy.

actually, the first movie, when i compare to the book are very much on the money. there seems to be very little content lost. i really like that.
imagine lord of the rings: verbose edition. the extended versions are roughly 12 hours all put together. imagine the 20+ hours of film that could have been. lol
