How to fix the \"HELP - I can't LOGIN!

Post by KoolBear »

Mainly this problem is related to IE users like me

Since the move firefox seemed to handle the cookie issues just find but IE won't here's what I have done and suggested to many others ....

First use the new mod I just added at the bottom of the index page ...
remove_cookies.php

Then close ALL browsers and try to login again.

If that still doesn't work then...
At the top of IE select ...
\"Tools\"
--> \"Internet Options\"
------> Select \"Delete Cookies\" Under General Tab in middle of screen
------> Select \"Delete Files\"
------> Select \"Delete Offline Content\" (just below the previous two (see above)
And that should resolve your issue.

Nope KB, I can log in using IE, but Firefox just reloads the login page, or says \"You have specified an unknown username or password.\".

Please don't make me use IE - it's like swimming in an open sewer!

had that problem (see my post in 'post move' thread) have you tried tools -> clear private data

and clearing the cookies.... it sucks cause some cookies are good (and tasty!) but i did and it let me log in. :)

Not to throw you for a complete loop KB, but I have Firefox and couldn't log in. Tried your delete cooky proggy but that didn't work. What did work was was goining into TOLS and blocking cookies from this site.
Hows that fit into the equation? HAH!

I think part of the problem was this temporary domain name this system had. Some of the cookies the DBB may have issued have this temporary name but point to the same IP address of the system. Maybe the various browsers just don't handle cookies the same way. Even though the temporary domain name points you to the DBB the DBB doesn't issue cookies for that name. Now that the DNS update is complete the cookies should work after they have been cleared.

At any rate let’s compile a little list of browsers the DBB has been tested with and make sure we don’t still have a problem.

Internet Explorer 6.0 - Needs testing
Firefox 1.07 - works after clearing cookies
Firefox 1.5 - Needs testing

Just happened to me in Firefox 1.5. The 'remove all cookies' link didnt fix it, but it worked after I cleared my cookies from the Options menu.

Here's what I have to do with ff1.7 Get to main screen and go into browser tools and click allow cookies. Then attempte to log in. Takes me to the old url and I am not logged in. I hit the back button and go back to main log in page, drop down tools and click do not allow cookies. Now I can log in but I am at the old DBB url(www.descentbb.net). I did NOT have to do this 2 days ago.

I haven't had any trouble using FireFox 1.5 / Linux. I'll try Opera when I get a chance and let you know.

Man... nothing funner then flushing bugs :P

EDIT: login fails completely in Opera even after deleating cookies. Tried both the lgoin link in the header and the fast login at the bottom of the page... no joy

EDIT2: After searching the cookies again I found that I had missed some. After deleting all the \"descentbb\" & \"dbb.vonclan.net\" cookies Opera worked fine.

In Firefox 1.0.7, I couldn't log in until I deleted not only the descentbb.net cookies, but also the www.descentbb.net cookie. Once I got the old www.descentbb.net cookie off, I was able to log in again.

Logged in, came to this thread and when i clicked reply it asked me to relogin. This is annoying as I have to login everytime I come here using any browser (IE or firefox).

Cleared cookies and restarted FF and no go.

I had a problem logging in earlier, and had to switch to Firefox as opposed to Mozilla Suite to login and post. Once I nuked the descentbb.net and www.descentbb.net cookies, I was able to login like normal. Whether or not I stay logged in after I close my browser yet remains to be seen.

the \"remove cookies\" link (with closing down firefox) didn't fix it for me.

i manually deleted the individual cookies for descentbb.net in firefox (1.5) options.

that fixed it - didnt' even have to restart firefox.

Nothing has worked for me so that would rule it's not on my end since I haven't changed anything since the DBB moved. Gotta be server side.

now that's just specious reasoning...

more logically, if you are the only person still having this problem, it must be on your end. :P

Richard made some configuration changes last night while working on the cookie issue hopefully the issue is resolved now.

I also updated the session cookie length.

Merlin, please verify the all cookies to dbb.vonclan.net, descentbb.net, www.descentbb.net and .descentbb.net are deleted.

Ok this is becoming annoying.

Deleted history files. No go.
Uninstlaled Firefox, removed all files left over manually and re-installed firefox.

Still same freaking problem.

HELP

Edit: Same problem still with IE.

im not notcing any issues switching between IE and FF 1.5

Make sure you are using 1.5, they fixed some odd cookie bugs from 1.0.7

you also might be running into the IE cache bug(which also affects cookies)

google for cache sentry

and use www.descentbb.net to get to the forum.

I dont know if this will be very useful for anyone, but I was having the \"cant login\" problem for a few days using firefox. I tried the delete all cookies link at the bottom, and after that proved to be a sporadic solution at best for me, I opened my firefox preferences, went into privacy options, view the cookies I have saved, and looked at each one. I found that there was one DBB cookie that was not being deleted, as it was set several months ago by an older version of the board. I manually annihilated it and I have not had a single problem logging back in to this board since.

hope that helps someone if anyone is still having this issue.
