the Republican war on books about Republicans

Post by Palzon »

So I went to Barnes and Noble to spend gift certicates I received over the holidays. I wasn't looking for anything in particular. However, being interested in science and politics I thought I would take a look at a book called, The Republican War On Science, by Chris Mooney.

Staff at the store told me there were copies in stock and to check the current affairs section. So i wander over to there. It's not there. I figure it's just a mistake.

The next day I went to a different Barnes and Noble. Again I'm told there are copies in stock, three copies. I check the section where they are said to be and they are not there. Now my interest is piqued. I mention this to the staff member.

The staff member checks the section, and she can't find it. She checks a few other sections and can't find it in them either. She checks the stockroom and there's no sign of the book. Then she remarks, \"Well...this is the type of book that people tend to hide, but usually around the time of an election.\"

Needless to say, I was shocked. Tonight I went back to the first Barnes and Noble. I'm told there are three in stock. None are there. This staff member also checked other sections and the back storeroom without success.

Now, the reason I post this here is first to ask, what sort of person hides books so that others cannot read them?

And second, I would like to ask for some participation. I'm convinced that some a$$hat has gone around to the stores in my end of town and hidden these things. I'm wondering if this is happening elsewhere. So if you want to participate, check your local store for the book and report back to this thread.

well the same kind of wacko that will vandalise an automobile because it had a bumper sticker that they didnt like. Saw it while at work. I Manage a Bodyshop. customer told me they caught the guy in the act, he said he took offense at the bumper sticker. all it said was \"one man / one woman\"

P.S. I hear the same thing happened to O'Reilly's book ironically also at Barnes and Nobles
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

The first time I was aware of this behavior was one of Rush Limbaugh's books when I was... well, I guess barely old enough to be aware of book-hiding in bookstores.

It also happens to Bibles, \"the Satanic verses\", books on conspiracies (JFK, neocon PNAC, MLK, etc.), books by/about Nazis, books by/about Lenin or Marx, and pretty much anything else that can remotely be construed as controversial.

Sometimes it's the bookstore employees doing it, too. The boss / owner gets some copies of the book in stock and has them put out on the shelf, and then the employee \"accidentally\" puts them in back to make room for some other book.

What sort of person does this? The same sort of people who think Democrats' ideas are wrong and evil and people shouldn't be exposed to them. The same sort of people who think, well, maybe it's OK that you believe in God, as long as you don't say anything about it in public. The same sort of people who try to shout down public speakers they disagree with. The same sort of people who think anyone who dares disagree with them should be banned. EDIT: The same sort who steal election signs. It's people who are insecure in their beliefs and unable to support or defend them on equal ground.

well for experimental purposes - pick any book, any author. I'm not saying this is only a Republican thing - it's just my example.

So go seek out any title at Barnes and Noble or anywhere. What books can you find that are missing in action? Report your results here.

Here's the key - the bookseller has to tell you it's in stock, should be the on the shelves, and it can't just be misplaced, such as stocked in the wrong place. And if you really want to impress, then check more than one store.

Until this experience I never imagined the book-hiding enterprise was occurring.

(and yes, Kilarin, I'm still sure this board is largely conservative :P )

i've encountered it in the past, borders and barnes and nobles both, can't even remember what i was looking for... but while it was supposed to be in stock, it was no where to be found. ordered it from internet, got it. life went on...

similar experience with my ex-wife, who runs a Hollywood Video... people would actually slide and hide the renatl copies of various political / documentary movies. (recent one she told me about was the entire wall of Farenheit 9/11 she found 20 copies hidden in the 'Childrens' section).

people is dumb.

An employee at Amazon tried to hide a book from me, but a search turned it up.

Reading my post may help; it's a play on the title of the book I happened to be searching for. nothing more.

When I go get that leather-bound, annotated, signed copy of the Savage trilogy, I promise a new catchy liberal-bashing thread title if there are any hijinks in the book stocking, mkay?

Uh, because it's about republican books being hidden? Are you that much of a knee jerk go-team reactionary that you can't handle a republican based subject without bringing up a democrat?

LOL!

Perhaps instead of \"Precisely. Why is the thread title singling out the republicans?\" I should have wrote \"Precisely. Why is the thread title singling out the republicans when the dems are just as bad?\" :D.

With all due respect Birds ... I never attacked you, I just made a (albeit smart@$$) comment suggesting that maybe you misinterpreted my mood. I suppose I should use emoticons more often eh?

Ice, I used the word attack in a non-emotional fashion. I simply used it describe what you focused on, in a non personal manner.

Again, I do not understand why you must focus on the democrats in such a knee jerk fashion.

The topic here is someone hiding books because of a political ideology. It doesn't really matter which party it is. Yet all the replies I saw here, including yours, were throwing in 2 cents about how 'the dems are just as bad' which is not the subject -- book hiding is.

Sheesh.

Birds, you just now realized that they do that? Any kind of snipe at Republicans, even if you put a disclaimer that you KNOW Dems do the same thing, you will end up saying it at least three times. They're Republican, henceforth, a little less educated and can't grasp the concept of taking a little criticism. Oh well, personally, I've never seen it happen. But, I really don't look for political books, those jerks have enough of my money, I don't need to contribute any more.

Yes. You said:
"What sort of person does this? The same sort of people who think Democrats' ideas are wrong and evil and people shouldn't be exposed to them."

So I don't know why you exclude yourself. Instantly the republicans had to knee-jerk "oh well the dems and liberals do this too" rather than simply talking about the situation. The political party tit-for-tat thing just HAD to be done ;p

Ice, you were referring to liberals. Sorry, I meant "Liberals or Democrats" -- Thanks!

Just because the word "Democrats" appeared in that sentence doesn't mean it was about Democrats being "just as bad"...

Reread that sentence. Does it really look to you like that sentence is saying something negative about Democrats? Or was I saying something negative about people who hate Democrats and want Democrats to keep quiet?

My point was, in fact, exactly about the subject. It was about *what sort of people hide books*. Read it again, and this time try to suppress your knee-jerk "assume everyone else's reaction was a knee-jerk" reaction ;)

On the subject of book hiding, I think it's dumb that people in general will hide a book that opposes their view. The person's time would be much better spent actually reading the book, dissecting it, and then publishing a work concerning why the book is wrong. Man's automatic reaction is to combat ignorance with ignorance. The best thing a person can do is learn that they are responsible for providing others with the truth, and that what others do with that truth is up to them. The key to the issue is that one can better support their cause with more, better information than they can by trying to remove conflicting information.

Hiding a book implies fear and weakness. If the only way to win the argument is to prevent anyone from hearing the other side, you have already lost.
