This was a church function, mainly a priesthood quorum activity, and so the other guys I'm with are fellow priesthood holders/friends

Your certification training takes care of that. You learn ear clearing techniques. I have been down to 140 feet with no problems. We missed each other by about a year. I moved to Rancho Bernardo (a northern suburb of San Diego) in 1969.
