Network LAN Game Issues

Hey, after we switch from DSL to Cable (which is faster BTW), my bro and I can't play LAN games of BF1942! We had to get an actual router, instead of a network hub or whatever we where using for DSL. We got a D-Link router, and if I start a LAN game, my bro cannot see it in his in-game server browser for LAN games.

But, I can start an internet game and my bro can join that just fine. Now, we are on the same workgroup called NETWORK, but I don't think my father's computer is configured for the NETWORK workgroup. And his computer is plugged into port #1 on the router. Maybe this is the problem?

But I can access my bro's files fine in the network places, as can he. I use Windows XP, ad does my bro but my father uses Windows 98SE because that computer is OLDE.

So please if there are any obvious things that may be causing this problem tell me so I can sort this out?

You need to do some pinging. Make sure both PC's have the same subnet mask, and are in the same IP range; (IE 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101... etc)

Try pinging the other PC's IP address and see if you get replies.

Weird. I checked what my bro's network IP address is and, IT'S TEH SAME AS MINE!

Wtf?

and no this is not the internet IP because when I go to whatismyip.com (da pofesinal websit) it is different from that number. I am scared and cunfused...

Dude... if both PC's are using the same IP then there will be problems. Do you mean subnet?

Example PC A:
IP Address 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Example PC B:
IP Address 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

That website will only give you the IP address of the router, not the computers connected to it. Here's what you do:

1. Start > Run
2. Type "cmd" (without the quotes of course) and hit 'enter'.
3. In the Command Line box, type "ipconfig" and hit 'enter'.

This will bring up the information. Make sure that it is correct. It should be, because you can see each other's files. I don't have BF1942, so I couldn't help you if the problem was there. However, I do have a D-Link router, and we can check your router settings to see if there is anything abnormal.
