Sorry Ace....

Post by Will Robinson »

I didn't mean to crap on your thread. I just wanted to be a bit of a smartass and didn't expect to start a trend so...

To everyone who reads this, I got this friend who has a problem with his computer, here's his symptoms:

**************************
all my program icons are gone, my AC'97 drivers are gone......all my custom settings have been restored to default XP Pro settings............all my System Restore points have been erased which now i cant revert back to and get everything back the way it was.......but get this, all my applications and programs folders, my documents, and other items are still there and untouched??!?!?!?!?!!?

anyone got any ideas as to what happend? both router and firewall have no logs of unusual activity, and NAV shows no virus logs or events
*************************************

Thanks for helping me help him and keeping me from being a total asswipe for screwing with his thread!

System Restore gone CRAZY?

System Restore is bad because xp doesn't come with Virus Scanner... it likes to keep copies of infected files that the AV had already removed.

Maybe scanreg went on a bender.

Sounds like you've been logged in as a new user account. I'd try to create a new account with the old name and see if it returns (but I don't really know what I'm talking about).

nope, same account name, same program files, start menu intact, i have no idea what caused this, but im about 40-45% recovered with re-installing and reconfiguring.

OH BTW: how do you disable those annoying little "tips" ballons?

i will try to see if i can recover anything else from my account,

*EDIT* it has changed now that you mention it and i looked at it, it now shows me as "Administrator" when it was a custom name "CapStar362"

Will, NP Man, i know you were being smart, but the next comment is what threw me off :x

If you are now Admin, I'd go into the control panel into the account section and see what other accounts are on that machine. Chances are your old stuff is all still there but you won't see it, obviously, until you log in with the correct account.

Ace, sounds like something fucked up your profile.

btw, there are no custom names for profiles. Atleast not in the sense that you're talking about. "Administrator" is the Windows equivilent to Linux' or Mac's "root" account. Its the default administrator account thats created when you install the OS. Go into your Control Panel, click on Admin tools and double-click on "Computer Management". Click on "Local Users and Groups", double-click on Users and see if your profile is still listed. If its still there, then atleast the data still exists for that profile and can be recovered.

A similar thing happened to my mother some time ago. I have no idea what she did, but she royally fucked up her profile so I created a new one and bumped her down to "Power User". I left her an admin account to do stuff like run Windows Update, etc if she ever needed to. If you ask me, running as an admin all the time is just plain stupid from a security standpoint anyways.

Sounds to me like he disabled fast user switching, and turned it on again before the first reboot. or using a POS registry tweeker program ( I choose to think the latter )

Stop being Ghey Ace....

STOP, DROP And ROLL!

START/CONTROL-PANEL/USERACCOUNTS (btw you will not see your name listed)
Select change the way users Log on and off

Disable Welcome Screen
Disable Fast User Switching (very ghey anyway)

REBOOT!

when standard NT logon Dialog apears type in your Normal user name and Password(if you did not have a password see below).. Enjoy Bonehead

** your computer was hacked because of lack of a password and someone deleted your profile folder

Apart from some minor quirks (mainly caused by programs not being completely multi-user aware) Fast User Switching is actually quite cool. Being able to switch from say, a Power User account to Administrator without logging the former out is great. It's not quite as elegant as the Linux su/sudo programs but then, this is Windows :P

For that sort of elegance, there is right-click "run as..." on a program, or even do the same for an explorer or command prompt window and do and run what you need from there.

uhhh smartass, bubblebitch..................i do not use fast switching and i do type in a account name and password......so STFU and stop assuming and making a "A$$" out of "U" not "ME" <-- just in case you missed that, its "ASSUME" broken down

anyways, i recovered everything and at the same time relized some of those programs that couldnt be replaced i no longer used anyways. all i really needed to do was just install all the apps again over the existing untouched folders, to simply replace the icons, shortcuts, and windows system, system32 and other needed windows componnents the app required. then just reset my custom settings back the way they were, i got all my drivers working with the exception of one.....SMBus Driver(which for some reason has disabled my AGP Bus and is forcing my GFFX 5600U to run in PCI Mode) :?: :?: .......im searching DriverGuide for a Intel 845 E/G SM Bus chipset driver

See you try to assist the IDIOT.. and what do you get .... A$$Combat, FootCombat or AceTroll bouncing around on an angry stick....

This is what you do from now on A$$ when you have a problem...DEAL WITH IT. The thing is..... 10 out of 10 times it's A$$Wombat's fault anyway!

BAN HIS A$$ From this forum since he has the answers to his self induced problems anyways!

See I knew his little act would only last so long before he would return to his old ranting ways...which grows old!

Forget DriverGuide or whatever. Just go to Intel's site. They have a driver download for all their chipsets, similar to Via's 4in1, except stable of course. ;)
