Cable connect is GREAT here for me at this time. I have a SB3100 cable modem presently but it has started to reset all by itself when I put a heavy load on it. (torrents) The modem is rented and comcast tech has recomended I swap it out for another one at the cable store. SO. Do I rent or buy? If I buy, what do you recomend?

What you can do is go down to a local payment center and swap your modem for another one, and if the problem still occurs with the new modem, then call in to schedule an appointment with a technician so that they can determine the issue.

Scott > it recommends that they not be purchased for use with comcast... but they do not need to be removed... so the ones that do NOT say can not be upgrqaded to comply with docsis 1.1 are approved modems?
JohnU > It just means that those modems cannot be upgraded to meet the minimum requirements required for the Internet Service, if you are to purchase one, select one that does not indicate that it cannot be upgraded.
