I keep losing jumpdrives in school computer labs. This last time someone didn’t turn it in to 'lost and found' and just kept it. It’s not a big deal but now I want something bulkier that’s hard to lose so I found this…

So can I use this like my old drive… … where I just plug it into any machine I use and have my work saved?
If so I have a bunch of hard drives laying around I can just pop in like a 20 or 300 gig.

and no, you can use external HD's like jumpdrives - they take standard 3.5 IDE drives, and they aren't very portable. You more likely to break the thing than lose it.

Dude. Im really REALLY talented at loosing these. Yes i've lost two walking home that were attached to my key chain.
And if it's a question of durability, im a fat guy. I move slow.

With that external drive you'd have to make sure to not lose the power adapter, since you'd have to take it with you wherever you went.

Just get a basic pen drive, with the lanyard that goes around your neck, and spray paint it hot pink and glue a sh!tload of glitter to it.

The thing is, i would LOVE to have 400 gb where ever i went! But ur saying i would have to plug in an ac adapter?

Yep, USB has no hope of powering a full-size hard drive. It's speced to provide 500mA per port, and most IDE HDDs take that just on the 5V rail. No way you're going to get the power to power the 12V rail, no matter what kind of voltage boosting circuit you use.

You could go for a 2.5\" drive and enclosure that runs off USB, but the drives are more expensive and only come in smaller sizes. Handy if you have a spare laptop drive kicking around though

Or just the expensive portable external HDD that you could scratch and sharpie your name on. And build something that will beep like crazy if you go too far from it.

I knew already when i found the drive that it included a power cord for it. But i dont know what kind of male adapter it is.

Yeah. You'll see the same thing with external hard drives in general, theyll have a USB port to connect to the PC and a brick-type power adapter that plugs into a wall socket (pretty similar to a laptop power adapter).

On the ZipZoomFly product page click on 'More Images' and you can see that the backside of the enclosure has USB, Firewire, and power ports.
