Such wonderful support -- NOT!

Post by TechPro »

Below is a copy of the transcript from an online chat I had with a support rep with my ISP. Short story: They changed something on their end that causes a their spam blocking add-on for Outlook to go ballistic which results in Outlook eating up 100% cpu usage :x After this chat with their support... I've elected to not use their spam blocking add-on.

Somehow I just wasn't impressed with the person's ability to be of any help. (note: product names, company names, and addresses changed to 'cause I'm such a nice guy  )

---------------------------------------------------------------------
[10:44:01 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you for contacting MyISP LiveChat, how may I help you today?
[10:44:26 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: My Outlook is running at 100% cpu usage
[10:44:42 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: If I uninstall the EmailSpamStopper add-on... it's ok
[10:45:14 AM] Shirley A.: Okay, will try my best to help you.
[10:49:11 AM] Shirley A.: Outlook is a Microsoft product.
[10:49:47 AM] Shirley A.: It will not harm your computer even if it is at 100% usage.
[10:49:57 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok
[10:50:11 AM] Shirley A.: Please ignore it and continue using it.
[10:50:29 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: you're serious?
[10:51:43 AM] Shirley A.: Yes, I am.
[10:51:59 AM] Shirley A.: Incase you face any problem we are here to help you.
[10:52:35 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: Yes, Outlook won't harm my system... but it's MyISP's EmailSpamStopper add-on that's causing it to run at 100% cpu usage
[10:53:28 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: Ever tried to use a computer that's running at 100% usage?
[10:54:43 AM] Shirley A.: In that case, we have another option for you to go to the bellow listed link to use our EmailSpamStopper in the Web Mail :
[10:54:53 AM] Shirley A.: http://webmail.myisp.net
[10:56:49 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: OK, I'm signed in.
[10:57:35 AM] Shirley A.: Are you in the Inbox?
[10:57:41 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: yes
[10:58:16 AM] Shirley A.: Okay, on the left hand side do you see EmailSpamStopper?
[10:58:25 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: yes
[10:58:33 AM] Shirley A.: Please click on it.
[10:58:45 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok
[10:59:53 AM] Shirley A.: Now, click on setting's to decide what would you like to keep the EmailSpamStopper at?
[11:00:20 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: currently it's on High... which is where I like it set
[11:02:00 AM] Shirley A.: Okay, in that case please be sure that your addresses book is updated in Web Mail.
[11:02:25 AM] Shirley A.: To get a pleasure of receiving all expected email.
[11:02:45 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok
[11:02:49 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: it's good
[11:03:23 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you.
[11:03:50 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: what next?
[11:04:41 AM] Shirley A.: Please click on save change's at the bottom of the page.
[11:05:20 AM] Shirley A.: This will help you to use our EmailSpamStopper in Web Mail.
[11:05:36 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok, did that
[11:05:44 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you.
[11:05:54 AM] Shirley A.: Is there anything else I may assist you with?
[11:06:38 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: You're done?
[11:07:04 AM] Shirley A.: Yes.
[11:07:47 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: You haven't fixed a single thing. The MyISP EmailSpamStopper add-on still causes a problem with the email software on my system
[11:09:09 AM] Shirley A.: I agree, that it why I suggested a usage of the Web Mail EmailSpamStopper instead of the Outlook EmailSpamStopper.
[11:10:43 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: Which is not a very practical method for a person who uses 5 of the available email addresses (as per my MyISP agreement).
[11:11:58 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: Requiring me to use the web mail method for each one of those 5 addresses is not a solution at all.
[11:12:28 AM] Shirley A.: Alright, now we will try one more step together.
[11:13:28 AM] Shirley A.: The step(s) that we are going to perform may alter settings in Windows. MyISP would not be responsible for any changes that happen and may not take effect since its a workaround with the Windows system.
[11:13:44 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: Understood.
[11:13:59 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you.
[11:14:34 AM] Shirley A.: Click on Start button of your computer --> Click on Run --> Type msconfig and click on ok
[11:14:54 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok
[11:15:12 AM] Shirley A.: You'll get system configuration utility window.
[11:15:20 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: ok
[11:17:00 AM] Shirley A.: Click on services tab --> Put a check on hide all microsoft files and then click on disable --> Click on the startup tab on top and click on disable --> Click on Apply and Ok. Then restart the computer and put a check on don't show me this warning in the dialog box that appears before the desktop is loaded.
[11:17:48 AM] Shirley A.: At this point of time we cannot restart the computer as we would disconnect each other.
[11:18:18 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: understood
[11:19:12 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you, try this out.
[11:19:25 AM] Shirley A.: I am sure it would help you.
[11:19:49 AM] Shirley A.: Anything else you would like me to help you with?
[11:20:20 AM] myemailname@myisp.net: No, if that works, that would be everything.
[11:20:33 AM] Shirley A.: Thank you again.
[11:20:38 AM] Shirley A.: You're welcome and thank you for using MyISP LiveChat. Should you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us again.

Side note: The time stamp indicates 10:45 AM to 11:20 AM ... The time for me (US Mountain Time) was 9:45 PM to 10:20 PM. That means \"Shirley A.\" was probably in India.

Doesn't necessarily have to be India, but it certainly appears to be.

At the least, you're right that it seems that English is not the tech support person's native language, considering phrases like, "To get a pleasure of receiving all expected email" and the overly-formalized tone.
