Best Buy has requested that we display a banner ... here the email...
Dear Webmaster of Descent Community Forums,

We are interested in text ad and/or banner placement on Descent Community Forums for Best Buy at 15 cents per unique click up to $300.

Best Buy is now featuring the Xbox 360 releases of Call of Duty 2, Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Full Auto, Fight Night 3, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Battlefied 2; Modern Combat and the PS2 release of The Godfather: The Game!

Best Buy is also hosting a Gaming Championship featuring games like Ghost Recon; Advanced Warfighter and other exciting games! Participants will compete for prizes including cash prizes, and the semi-finalist teams will win a trip to Los Angeles for the finals in early May during the world-renowned E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo)!

If you are interested in being an advertiser for this campaign, please go to http://www.hypemakers.net/bbyapril/go/v/invite/s/1860 to sign up (your information will not be shared with any other party).

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you!

All the best,

Nabeel Hatem and Karin Chamberlain
Hype Council
http://www.hypecouncil.com
Is this something we want to do? If we could get everyone to click a link when they visit the DBB it would offset hosting fees.

If this is an april fool's joke, it's funny.

if it's serious... no way. the whole idea behind the dbb was to NOT have advertising.

they can take their offer and shove it for all i care.

uh, no. they work the same way as when you would donate to charity. something you don't have to do, but it's nice if you do.

That doesn't seem like much money. I don't really care either way, but not Best Buy. Best Buy are not the kind of people I want to see ads for. I can always just use adblock anyway.

No, not a good idea. They probably sent this message out to 1,000 other gaming BBS's; let them shove this crap in their users' faces. I say keep this place pristine. :)

Ya, we could do it and put it on a hidden page with an invisible link. Maybe all the search engines will find it anyway and ++click it anyway. Free money!

Interesting thought, and have the proceeds (if any) from the bots drop into the dbb hosting account

A slightly different compromise on that.
Put a small button/link on the main descentbb page that says "Click here for ads"

Anyone who feels the urge to contribute a few minutes of time can click on it, pull up the page with the banner ads, and click on those to send a little money to the dbb. When you don't feel like it, you don't see them and they don't annoy you.

Doesn't look like it would work anyway. Besides I'm not willing to fill out a W-9 for this stuff. That would give them way too much info about me.
