Bose Companion computer speakers

Bought them today, after I'd seen them for a reasonable price the first time in Germany, set them up, and ... oh man, what a wonderful sound system, I *love* it! I had a Logitech 2.1 Cambridge speaker system before, and it just can't compare. Highly recommendable if you don't need true surround sound (like me).

Yeah, Bose are great! They make the best speakers. How much did you get them for?

Oh Please. Bose make the same old speakers as everyone else.

If you want the best speakers, you better start saving now, so you can afford a set of Shahenians or Stax electrostatics in about 20 years.

You must understand that speakers are the LEAST important part of any sound system. All a piece of audio gear can do is faithfully handle what is passed to it in the chain of reproduction.

So, your recording is the most important thing, followed by the playback device, then the pre-amplifier, following by the power amp, and then the speaker cables, and then the speakers.

Its the absolutely shocking quality of 99.99% of speakers which means upgrading them makes your system sound better.

Once you actually own some semi-decent speakers, upgrading to \"good\" speakers actually makes your system sound worse, because they faithfully reproduce all the crappy defects your system produces.

The theory goes like this: a million bucks worth of stereo gear fed into a set of $50 speakers sounds infinitely better than $50 worthy of gear plugged into a pair of million dollar speakers.

Mobius is an old 'Stinkstiefel' (stinky boot).

Ofc he is right, but if your entire system is top notch and the speakers are crap, they will still ruin your audio experience.

I paid 249 Euros, which is very close to the U.S. retail price (a miracle for Germany, where you pay 'luxury fees' for stuff like that).

And Bose is different from other speaker manufacturers. Their speakers deliver very good sound, particularly for the size. I am having a Bose Lifestyle 50 surround system in my living room, and it sounds awesome - be it for music or video sound. I once watched a DVD movie when one of our guests suddenly said 'hey watch out there's water running somewhere here!' It turned out that she had been sitting right in front of one of the surround boxes and had heard a small creek from the movie ...

Btw, sad thing is: When you're old enough to afford the perfect speakers, you cannot enjoy them any more because your hearing isn't good enough any more ...

Oh, btw, I have an Audigy 2 soundcard which produces pretty good sound, imho.

If you own a creative soundcard, regardless of price, thats one low quality component for audiophiles. If you are buying for audio quality, you need to spend the money to replace that first.

Tip: if you can, turn off EAX processing, the CMSS stuff, and resample the audio output to 48000 khz to get past the augidy's really bad resampler.

I find it pretty good. And there's no EAX involved when listening to music, or is it? And then, while my speakers aren't bad for PC speakers, they cannot compare to full blown stereo set.

What sound card would you recommend? But keep it reasonable - if I want to listen to a symphony, I use my living room stereo set, not my computer.

EAX w/ music is being used for echo effects to make it appear you're in a concert hall or something.

the audigy resamples everything to 48000 for internal processing, then downsamples it to 44100 for analog output for some dumb reason.

Audiophile cards - the kind that Mobius wouldn't demoan us for start in the 400 USD range I believe. I can't name a specific brand, snooping around the hydrogenaudio forums would cough one up pretty fast.

And its not a soundblaster.

I've got the X-Fi Platinum card with Logitech 2.1 THX speakers.

I dont know how it compares to your setup, but I love mine.

The Bose speakers have a very clear, natural sound, and are very good in the mid-range frequencies, where computer speakers often fail. The bass is very well defined and dry, yet voluminous without dominating everything. Fabulous, balanced sound, at least for a computer speaker system. It's actually a pleasure to listen to music using them.

I was recently at Comp-USA(Computer store) and they had just finished a whole new clean functional speaker system display.

This display was thought out very carefully, the display location was so the customer could stand anywhere from 1 - 15 feet away to sample the TRUE sound of the speaker systems. So I proceeded to test each one...... I was not impressed at all...

All of the new systems sounded like tin garbage cans with muddy bass from the subwoofer to fill in the lack of substance. I was looking for a new Setup...

The saviour to the computer store's entire display was the Klipsch 2.1 system.
I was not even going to test this one.
( Current owner of Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400( converted to 4.1 ) (1999) ).

Please keep in mind, I had about 6 other customers behind me sampling my demonstration. The Klipsch 2.1 system destroyed every system in quality, clarity, dynamics, with a beautiful full bodied sound that carried weight to your ears.

Oh did I forget to mention.... I had the subwoofer volume in the OFF position.
Even my Wife lit up when I said \"OK now let's turn on the Subwoofer and compare\"

I personally thought the new systems would have sounded better than a speaker system designed over 6 years ago...
Now you know why all high end PC Companies usally have a Klipsch system

Thanks for the info, I'll go check that system out. I'm getting so sick of my Comp-USA brand computer speakers. Though my JBL sub really helps out.
