Internet Explorer Connectivity issue

Can't connect to any websites. I'm using IE 6 off of Windows XP home edition sp2 and a Westell 327 Residential Gateway(DSL). After running cmd I can ping out to the gateway and websites but just cant open any web pages. I've also tried disabling my firewall (Norton) to no avail. I don't have any other web browser installed. Any suggestions?

Do a search for the HOSTS file and open it in notepad. It has no extension. Look to see if there are any entries other than 127.0.0.0 localhost.

Also run ADAWARE and SPYBOT Search n Destroy to see of you have spyware etc.

Open a command prompt and do the following:

Code: Select all

cd Desktop
ftp
op ftp.mozilla.com
(user name) anonymous
(password) your@email.address
cd pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5/win32/en-US
bin
ge \"Firefox Setup 1.5.exe\"

Then install Firefox and see if you still have any problem connecting to websites.

Or any webrowser

If the second Unplug your DSL modem and power cycle after 5 minutes to Clear the connection History in the modem for admin use (note not a hard reset)

-did search on hosts - 127.0.0.1 is the only entry
-Ran Norton IS scan, no virus or adware

-IE is the only web browser I have
-Unplugged and cycled my modem to death

Crazy
-When I enter op ftp.mozilla.com, I get
\"............(port)\"

When I enter cd pub/mozilla......., I get
\"not connected\"

Incidentally, I can connect with Descent 3 in multi with TCP/IP connection.

This really sounds like a DNS issue. Check with your provider on what DNS server entry's you should have and verify they are what the modem is useing AND what your system is useing. See if you can get to these sites by useing IP addy's instead of URL's

Sounds like a stupid idea, but powercycle all routers and modems. In IE, unlikely but try resetting the web settings, and in internet options/general tab/cache settings button, hit view objects and delete or update any damaged ones. Also check the IE security settings.
