Dropping cable DSL connection

A fiend is loosing her internet cable connection (\"Page can not be displayed...\" when the computer is idle. Comp is not in \"Standby\" or \"Hibernate\".

She does have \"My picture slideshow\" as a screen saver.

Ran a virus/spyware/malware check recently? Check the network adapters. Test with a different computer, if it still does it, contact the provider.

Try this:

Cable OR DSL.
DSL != Cable!

\"Loose\" = not tight.
\"Lose\" = misplace, or \"doesn't win\".
\"Loosing\" = presumably some method of un-tightening. (FYI: Not a word in the English language.)

LMFAO @ screen saver.
Pray tell - how on Earth could a screen saver affect a broadband connection???

Honestly, the mind boggles.

You might also want to check the properties on the nic card and see if the option under the power managment tab is checked off to allow the system to put it to sleep to save power when not in use.

um, wrong. "Loose" can function as a verb, though this was not the meaning intended in the OP.

besides, it was a "fiend" who was having this problem, so ... :P

This has just started the last week or so. I had her ck Power Management and unchecked it bu no help.

No help on the settings. She called and they're sending her a new modem.

Could be alot of things.

First do you have XP w/SP2?

If the new cable modem does not work, it is more and likely the nic card, how old is the nic card?
Also, is she hooked directly to the modem through the usb port/RJ45 connection, or is she using a router? If she's using a router what's the model#?

I suggested she call her cable company about getting a new modem and cable.

She did and all is well again.
