ZoneAlarm and Firefox...

Post by SirWinner »

ZoneAlarm 6.5.731.00 (free version) and Firefox 1.5.0.6 are not working too well for me the last week or 2.

BEFORE this becomes a flamewar or people slam me for using Firefox, I use Firefox for purely personal reasons... which include that it isn't as security hole ladden as other internet browsers. You use your internet browser of choice and I'll do the same!

Seems that I'm not the ONLY one having this issue based on google searches.

So, for now, when I need to browse the internet ZoneAlarm has to be shutdown.

Yet all the other internet programs that are used like FTP Clients work fine with ZoneAlarm.

Yes, I know how to configure ZoneAlarm properly... so that isn't the issue.

:x

no, we should be slamming you for using zone-scaredlikesheep. :P

are you sure you've given firefox access to the internet in zonealarm? delete and re-add it if you recently updated FF, and check your hosts file as well.

I'm using the exact same versions of both right now without any problems. Just from a cursory glance, it looks like a few of those Google results have potential solutions with them; have you tried anything out yet? I probably can't be of much help myself, since I'm sure you know far more about configuring ZA than I do.

(And who would slam you for using Firefox? If anything, you'd get railed on if you used IE. :P)

... until the FF 1.5.0.7 update came down automatically. Usually the updates just go fine, but 1.5.0.7 really screwed up something. I can run FF fine with ZA, but can't make it run when ZA is running. Tried all the forum help at mozilla, but still no workie. PITA.

Have you tried looking around for a place that still has older FF builds available? It might keep bugging you about upgrading, but at least you'd still be able to connect for the time being.

Edit: I just updated to 1.5.0.7, ZA came up with its usual \"requesting Internet access\" dialogs, and it's working fine for me. Weird...

Yeah, that's the whole part of the discussion I had at mozilla. They said to just remove the FF entries from ZA and the open FF again and have ZA redetect it, but the usual request for access popups would not open up from ZA and FF would just time out without opening any web site. FF would work just fine when ZA was turned off. It's probably just some stupid button setting or something, but I can't seem to find it. Sux. But hey, there's always IE. :P

Laugh at myself.

Just did a complete uninstall of Firefox and Zone Alarm, then did a fresh install of Fx followed by a fresh install of ZA. Autodetect now worked in ZA and I am once again able to use Fx 1.5.0.7 with ZA.

Moral: sometimes a little dynamite IS required.
