I recently volunteered my 20gig maxtor for working at work, and thusly in the first time in some years down to 1 HD, my 40 gig seagate.
so, what should I get, A new HD or a DVD writer?

You only have a 40 gig hdd? I mean I have a 36gig hdd as my main drive, but I also have like 800 gigs elsewhere.
You need another harddrive. Or not. What would you put on a DVD-r anyway?

House Hard drive Count:
1 10 gig fujitsu
1 17 gig fujitsu
2 40 gig seagates.
117 gigs of space in 4 computers.
like, what would I do with 800+ gigs of HD space?

I currently have a 12Gig HDD in my 450, a 30 gig in my 450, a 40Gig in my laptop, and a 120 gig in my newest comp. I'm going to be adding a 250gig to it soon as I'm getting pressed for space with all the TV I've bene capturing lately.
The next comp I build will be designed to break the 1TB barrier.

Currently I have two 120GB hard drives in my computer and a 30 GB + 80 GB drive in my server.
The 120s in my computer have 6 GB and 5 GB of free space each.

Just keep in mind that a DVD-r has 4.7 gigs of storage. If you're burning a video DVD you need double that space as temp space (once to encode the video to mpeg2, and again to author the image with vob files and whatnot). If you're pressed for space as it is it's going to be quite difficult to actually use a DVD burner unless you offload a bunch of random files onto them.
Having lots of hardrive space is good for videos. And CD images.

I'd definitely go for a nice large hard drive first.

What do you guys store on all that space? (Besides the obvious
) I've got one 80GB hard drive, and I've only used about 20GB of it. A DVD writer, on the other hand.../me drools
Seriously though, it depends on what you need. If you want massive storage space, go with the hard drive. If you want to burn your own DVDs, then get the DVD burner. If you want something cooler and less computer-nerd, go with another option.

as previously stated, a dvd-burner will do you no good without hard drive space, and if you only want one to backup files, just use regular cd's. sure it takes more cd's, but why fork over all the money for the dvd burner if you arent making movies?!

On this cable modem I can download as much as 20 GB in one day, that makes it really easy to fill a hard drive.
