I opened Descent 3 to play, but it said

try a restart, if that doesn't work, do ctrl-alt-del and see if Main.exe is running in the backround, if so shut it off, and D3 should work fine.

- kill all instances of main.exe
- clear the R attribute for all files in the D3 branch
- delete the files in the cache directory
- try again

D3 was made long before one Gig of mem was even close to common.
It uses something like a 50 meg cache. or a temp file.
incidently, Descent 3 \"forgets\" to let go of that cache. so you might see 50 megs of your hard drive \"disappear\" after you shut the game down.
