90 * 16 = 1440
90 * 10 = 900
Which makes it a 16:10 display.

I just couldn't find any better way of explaining it. But the way I found 90 was by dividing 1440 by 16, I knew 900 / 10 was 90 so no need to use a calculator on that. :P

Basically it is my understanding that

Code: Select all

If
Bear = shits in woods = true

Then
1440x900 aspect ratio = 16:10

Else
Goto End

End

1440 / 900 = 1.6

The thing that I've always been curious about is why that particular ratio is referred to as 16:10 when its simplest form is actually 8:5. :P

Might have to do with the film industry and the camera/film they use?

16mm wide by 10mm high??

Simple really; when shopping for a TV at the local Best Buy or equivalent people see 16:9 TVs and automatically assume 16:10 is bigger, while 8:5 would be smaller. The same people would say a radeon 8500 should be faster then a geforce 7900.

So in the end, they say 16:10 so it doesn't lose in the numbers on stickers game to the 16:9 displays. Most people who don't know any better but have money to burn will assume 16:10 > 16:9 > 8:5 > 4:3 without knowing that 16:9 is the widest, and 4:3 has the most screen area per diagonal measurement. If you sold a 4:3 display as 16:12, people might actually buy it!

Of course; I should remember that not everyone is capable of working out basic fractions. :P

Myself, I don't really like widescreens; there are too many programs that don't support widescreen.
Fortuantely for me, I have a 16:9 AND a 4:3 attached to my laptop. (The 16:9 has a higher resolution, so I use the latter for those programs only)
