WMP - strange!

Windows Media Player 10.00.00.4036

When WMP is NOT running, my CPU spikes to 100% every 4 seconds. When this happens a file is created in the folder ...Application Data\\Microsoft\\Media Player\\ called \"0015bffe.wpl\"and WMP appears in the Task Manager list for just a fraction of a second. WMP does not appear on-screen.

The file is then deleted and a new one is created. I have 3800 duplicate files in my Norton Protected Recycle Bin - all 4 seconds apart. Even if I launch WMP, and delete the folder structure supporting this rubbish, it is re-created instantly as soon as I close WMP.

Nothing unusual in Task Manager.

I have NAV 2004 fully updated. Adaware and Spybot scanned: NADA.

I rebooted. It seems to have stopped.

You should always reboot your system before asking for help. About 95% of the time that will fix most of the usual problems.

Windows eats it self over time. Hmm, what’s for dessert? Windows Vista? Mmmm, tasty.

Probally you have all the WMP crap on in the settings (options - player/privacy/library tabs) which kicks in DMR.... always updating and checking for music titles, updates and media licenses.

And this would cause the CPU to spike to 100% when WMP is not running?

Well, install Process Explorer and check what hogs the CPU if it happens again (I would guess that the WMP process was still active and kicking..)

Um Hello - If you have WMP set to default which is monitor all changes to your file and media directories and DMR is also installed...yes EVIL!!@

WMP has always had a tight leash on my box. It is not the default player for ANYTHING except WMA, WMV, ASF and ASX files - that's it.

It's set to disallow any reporting or phoning home. I never use it to play music or playlists. Now do I use it for anything except watching streaming content in WMV format.

The 100% CPU spike *IS* WMP opening, and then closing again.

But as I said, it has stopped doing this now.

Bubba, if you register for filesystem change notifications, your process has to be running or else the kernel will jump to potentially bad memory cause the WndProc for your HWND won't be valid. link
