Tech Question.. IE5 / IE6

Post by TOR_LordRaven »

Hey Guys, stumped on a issue here at work. None of the other Techs seem to know either, figured I would post my question here.

about 5 people are having the same problem. They cannot print in IE. No error messages, they just select File-> Print (or click on the print icon) get an hour glass, then it goes away. Does not even open up the print window to select a printer.

They are all running Windows 2000, but here is the wierd thing: in IE, when you click on \"Help -> About IE\", the splash logo says they are using IE6, but the version number says its 5.

One user, I attempted to repair IE, but it said \"Some files that should be version 6.xxx.xx.xx are actually 5.xx.xxx.xx - Repair Failed\".

I uninstalled IE6 (Back to 5.5, and seems to work) then re-installed IE6 using the Flat Files I saved to CD.

Same problem, it does not over-write the old IE5 files.

Has anyone seen this before?

Have you tried Microsofts site first? That would be my first stop.

Also, next time you post a tech question, you may get much better results if you post in the tech forum.

Yeah, I tried to run the Microsoft Update off the web-site to get IE6. Same issue as with the CD.

I thought I did put it in the Tech Forum..
Guess I didn't ;-)

Maybe we can get one of the MODs to move it.

Have you tried restarting the print spooler for each user? Also, have you tried windows update to update IE?

you mean start/stop the spool service? no, I havn't.
And I have tried to update in IE.

Everything else prints fine. Firefox prints fine, Lotus Notes, Office Apps. They all print fine. Just IE does not work.

What if you reset IE to it's defaults?

Try removing the printer from their machines and re-adding them.

yep - did that too.

Although not being able to print is the symptom, I don't think its the problem.

I think there is an issue with IE.

All other programs are printing fine.
IE is the only one thats having a problem. That plus IE is Version 6, but using Version 5 files.

When I try to reload IE 6 either by Disk or Microsoft.com, it does not help. It keeps retaining those version 5 files.

Try uninstlaling IE and delete the folder. Reboot, and do windows update.
