USB ports not working

A friend's computer (eMachine T2042) had a bad PS. It's fixed but in the process of having it restart & shutdown because of the PS, the USB ports and the speakers don't work.

The device mgr has an \"!\" on the Avance AC97 under \"Sound\". Although I have not yet been able to install a driver, I assume I will be able to.

The USB ports show O.K. in the Device mgr but they don't work.

They don't have a CD w/XP or a \"Restore\" disk.

What next?

Delete the usb controllers and hubs from device manager and the audio controller, then hit Action ---> Scan for hardware changes.

Will that install them again.

I did delete the Avance AC97 file and restarted and found it again but still could not install driver for it. Atleast I ass-u-me that the \"!\" is for a driver.

if XP doesnt have a driver for then check out driverguide.com for one.

Ten-four. I also found USB2 drivers on the eMachine support site.

Deleted All USB stuff and sound from Device mgr.

Restarted computer and it added all back but did not ask for drivers.

on the sound I updated the driver and pointed it to the CD I had downloaded the driver to.

It found 3 \"sound\" drivers on my CD but would not install any of them.

On the USB drivers, do I have to re-install \"hubs\" as well as \"controllers\"?

Tried to re-install one hub and one controller but still couldn't get USB to work.

Check the BIOS and make sure USB ports are ON.

Try the rear USB ports first. Then front ones.

Have you tried windows update?

Windows Update? Not sure why. Did install all the XP \"critical\" updates.

Could/would the BIOS reset itself?

The BIOS doens't reset itself but if the battery is dying, some werid things can happen.

Do a windows update but select CUSTOM and not EXPRESS. Check to see if there are updates for USB issues. Do not install THEIR hardware updates. They will mess up your system.

Oddly enough yesterday I had an issue with the USB ports on my system, after I unplugged the USB keyboard I have so I could use it on a laptop computer. When I returned and connected the keyboard to my PC, none of my USB devices worked including the keyboard, three mice, and the battery backup. After using my PS/2 keyboard to delete and reinstall all the USB hubs and controllers in device manager all 8 ports on the system were still dead. The USB keyboard didn't even work in BIOS so I knew it wasn't a problem with windows. Finally after physically disconnecting ALL USB devices from the computer, and rebooting then reconnecting the devices they all started working again as if nothing had ever happened.

How weird is that?

I didn't try to re-install the mobo driver. How do I do that from the Device mgr?

Have you tried removing all the USB root hubs in device manager?

Shutdown your PC after you do it, then unplug all USB devices. Boot up windows, log in if needed and then plug in 1 device. It should install itself.

I did remove all the USB stuff and they all showed up when I rebotted but did not work.

Check the USB connections on the motherboard. Remove the small cables and check to see if they have been burned. My wife's PS died and it took the whole MB with it.

The USB's in the back are inclosed and part of the mobo.

I ck the one in the front.

I should of said this before, but try checking the entire motherboard. Maybe the PS going blew a resister or something and it only affects the USB ports.

If a area around a part has a dis-colouration, compared to the motherboard, then it may be burnt.

I'm at another computer and need a quick question.

Can I re-install the mobo (chipset) driver w/o out fear of frying anything.

The USB's and sound arn't working but everything else is so I just don't want to mess them up so they can't get on the net, etc

Tried the mobo drivers, no help w/ the USB or sound.

That's all folks, on to the next computer which is an eMachine that I think has a bad PS. It shuts down and starts up again.
