If I shut my system down using standby mode, does this leave my system open to the net as far as my ip being visible etc?
Are there any down sides to using the standby mode?

No, not as far as network adapters go. But that's only if you have Wake-on-LAN enabled, and a wakeup packet is broadcast on your LAN. Chances of this happening range from zero (your home computer, or your network adapter has WoL support disabled or doesn't support it) to possible (computer sitting on your desk in the office).
I have a wired setup in my home, with a laptop and my desktop connected to a lynksys router (I dont have a static ip anymore ), connected to a dsl
modem.
I kind of like the standby mode, since it's so fast, so if there's no downside to using it, I'll just use standby every day instead of powering up and down 2 or 3 times a day....
