Far Cry

Post by bash »

Anyone else messing with this game/demo? So far I've rejected most groundpounders as same old, same old but this one is pretty damn entertaining. The graphics bar has been raised. I suck at using mouse for games but I might just tough it out for this one. Just released in the UK, soon to be released here (US).

I tried the demo and it had major graphic issues, aside from being slower than a slug on sedatives.

I did have up-to-date drivers.

It's a shame because it did look promising...

The physics and appearance of the bots is very realistic, I was having fun just shooting up the corpses. :D Plus, entertaining variety of vehicles and you can move and fire in separate directions. Lush and immersive environment, as well.

Finished the game last night, loved it. There are issues as the sound is not synched with the video in the cut scenes but it still is fun.

Able to drive:

Jeeps
Trucks
Boats
Hand Gliders
Forklift's
Dune Buggies

The demo is not a good representation of how the final game will run.

The only FPS I'm interested in playing besides HL2 and yeah...maybe Doom3 is Painkiller. I played the demo, although my setup doesn't run it very well, and was very impressed with the overall atmosphere of the game.

It's your typical cryptic destroy demons and hell swarms type game, but I like those if they're done really well. It kind of reminded me of Silent Hill in a way, which I enjoyed the first two games (haven't played the third).

ATM I'm addicted to GTA: Vice City (PC) since I never got to play it when it was released for the PS2. Few little annoyances but overall a fun game :)

Oh yeah, and Demos are definitely not a good indication of what the final game will be. Thats why Painkiller will probably (if it isn't out already) be much better then the demo I played that was already good :)

I played the demo of Far Cry last night and wasnt too impressed, considering the amount of hype its been getting. Theres a second demo with a different map that I havent played yet, I'll see how that goes. Considering that Gamespot said this was the best game since Half Life, I dont want it to suck :)

No graphical issues here, looked really nice on my 9700.

You can't load crates with the lift.

Not sure if it's avaliable for sale in US. I plan on buying the DVD version when it is.

As far as I know, NA distribution started last Wednesday, and Ubisoft is selling it on CDs instead of DVDs.

I tried the demo on my 2500 Barton AMD with a 9700 ati card and it ran just super. AI seems pretty good in that the enemy tries to track you down when you start shooting up the place. Kinda reminds me of Ghost Recon.

Heheheheh.... Sounds like Battlefield Vietnam... lol I'm a fan of the Battlefield and I fite and die there every day, not been there lately becuase I've been sick.. Hey wouldn't that be cool if someone made something like Neopets except it was Descent? ehh, oh well... Battlefield Vietnam has graphics issues and they didn't have time to fully optimize the code so.... it runs like terds. I mean I have to set all my graphics on all LOW with my P4 2.4c and my GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64 mb, and people with Radeon 9800 pros can't even PLAY the damned thing because of all the problems you get with it......

Well, this second demo seems to be quite a bit tougher than the first one. Took me forever to fight my way across to the safety of the cave door and IT'S FREAKING LOCKED! :x Now I gotta fight my azz out again to find the damn key. Grr. Are we having fun yet? :D

Well I finished the game yesterday, and have to say it was definately worth a play through. The graphics are incredible, the vehicles are fun to drive and very plentiful, and the physics add another interesting interaction mechanism. I suppose rolling barrels down hills will get boring after a while, but this is the first game I've seen to pull it off quite successfully.

Also the gameplay is quite good. It's essentially set up the same way Doom 3 is. Stamina meter, limited number of weapons you can carry at once, and the fact that you can't just run around shooting because you're just way too inaccurate to be deadly. But the best part was that there are usually multiple paths to get to certain areas, so you don't feel like you're in a valley and have to go straight through a bunch of guys like in so many other games. In several places you can go by either land or sea to get to an objective, both paths with their share of enemies, and autosave points, and whatnot. A lot of planning went into the maps.

The building up to the harder enemies (and to a lesser extent the main plot points) was also very well done. Really tried to scare you, and not in the cheesy half-life-esque little guys jumping out of dark places kind of way. More like "wow I'm going to have to fight these guys later". And when you get to the last level, it's almost not even fair. This is one game that really gets successively harder when you go through. I almost want to play through it again because I know the earlier guys pose no threat compared to the later ones, so I'd probably play it differently.

The AI of the human players is pretty good, too. Better than a lot of other things it seems. When you hear them say "flank him", they mean it. One strategy I've used in other games which doesn't work here is making a noise and waiting at a choke point with a bunch of weapons. The guys in this game don't fall for it, so you have to expose yourself in order to get past a lot of people. Makes the game a lot harder, and more realistic.

Overall I'd say it's a worthy game to pick up if you're looking for a fresh single player FPS.

Ty, played the Painkiller demo. Graphics are very nice, er, nasty, as well. Best part about Painkiller is it will run on a triplehead system. :D Might have to pick that one up too. :D
