IDE to USB Adapter - need driver
I purchased a Vantec CB-IUSB20 so I could hookup a slave drive temporarily.
However, I am unable to \"see\" the drive and the mini disk that they gave me only shows \"card reader\" drivers.
I'm running it on a WinXP machine.
I used it originally a moth or so ago on another machine but no luck on this one.

Plug it in, when the exclamation mark appears, update the driver from device manager and tell it to search online for it. It also maybe your USB root hub. You may need to unplug the drive, then in device manager, remove all USB ROOT HUBS, then reboot. It will automatically find them again and re-install them. One that is done, relpug the USB drive.

W2k & XP don't need extra drivers if the adapter conforms to the USB mass storage device class.
If connected, what exactly are you seeing ? Does it show up in the device manager under Disk Drives (should have a Seagate in its title) ? Does it show up in the Disk Manager ? If so, if you don't see any drive label or something like \"FAT/NTFS, healthy\" the disk needs to be partitioned & formated.

Trust me these USB to IDE adapters are extremely touchy till you figure them out.
Here is the exact process you should try to get them working.
1: set the drive jumper to MASTER
2: plug the adapter into the drive
3: plug the power into the drive
4: turn the power on
5: wait (10 seconds) for the drive to spin up
6: plug the USB end of the adapter into the computer
I have a USB to IDE adapter that I use on occasion and I have to use those exact steps to get it to function properly, if I deviate from it in the slightest it does not work. Meaning if I power on the drive first, then plug the adapter into the drive, it won't work.

Krom,
I tried that and here's what happens.
I got the 200GB drive powered up, plug in the USB to the computer and I heard a sound on the computer.
I looked in the Device Manager and saw USB Mass Storage device. Then in about 20 seconds I heard another sound and the USB Mass Storage device is gone.
I have the HD set as Master and have also tried as slave.

Note that I just used my USB to IDE adapter on a 160 GB drive yesterday, and I had to go through that whole procedure twice to get it to finally work. Don't bother trying the slave or cable select options in the drive, either setting will guarantee it won't work.
And last but not least, when you have the drive powered up and connected go into disk management in windows *(start -> run -> \"diskmgmt.msc\") and verify that the drive is actually not showing up. Because if the drive is not yet partitioned, it won't show up in explorer even if it is attached and working but it will show up in disk management as unpartitioned space.

Tried on another machine and get mass storage, then I try to update driver and I get \"Unknown device\".
I tried to download Unknown Device Identifier but the site is not available.
Can't change cable because thes cables are unique to this product.
I will try to \"slave\" it directly and see what she do.

Are you referring to using the USB cable, or IDE ribbon cable? You've got to be specific when answering these types of questions. We can't really help you unless you give us as much detail as you possibly can.
If you're using the USB adapter, leave it set to master. Changing it to slave will do absolutely bubkiss for you since its the only device connected.
Did you check for any updated mobo drivers?
Well, tried one last time this morning and the 30GB HD with the external USB hookup on another computer and it worked, so I tried the 200GB HD and it worked.
Then I tried the 200GB on the original computer and it worked.
The only thing that may have changed is the jumper itself since I have 4 or 5 in a box and I just pulled one out and \"mastered\" it.
Thanks for all of your input.

Well I was just pointing out that it was not your computer that was having the issues it the drive.
Your configuration either messed up on the drive or your enclosure is dead, I do tech support for Iomega, and commonly when you see the unknown mass storage device its the enclosure that is dead. Try tossing another drive in just for kicks and giggles.

Then I suggest you learn how to read. This is an adapter, not an enclosure. This was clearly stated in the opening post, and later in the thread.captain_twinkie wrote:Well I was just pointing out that it was not your computer that was having the issues it the drive.

Hell, in the post just before yours he just said it worked!Bought it about a month ago and it's not really an encloser.
There's two cables. One cable plugs into the 40 pin connecter and the other end plugs into a USB port on the computer.
Then the other cable is plugged into the power "port" on the HD and the other end is plugged into the AC.
