memory testing suggestions

Post by dissent »

I have a laptop that is having some freaky behavior going on, just locks up at random times. Have active AV running so I dont think its a virus. I want to test the memory - am looking for recommended testing programs. Also, I tried to create a bootable CD to do this with Microsofts memory tester, but the CD was not bootable. How do I create a bootable CD with the memory tester installed. (I followed Microsofts directions to the letter - cant for the life of me imagine why it wouldnt work  :P )

Have you done all the regular stuff like defrag and such? If your HD is close to full and it's fairly fragmented, you will have problems. The caching won't want to work well.

http://www.memtest.org/ Works pretty well if you let it run for the full 30+ cycles, takes a day or two though.

Thanks all for the links and ideas. I've got very little time to spend on this over the next two weeks, but after that I'll give some of this a try.

Well, memtest86+ gave 0 errors on 15 passes in 4 hours and 40 minutes. That's all I can manage right now. I'm going to run a defrag and go on from there.

Hey, also learned how burn an iso to cd; way easier that I was originally making it out to be.
