Another reason Descent is better than any Ground Pounder

Post by Sergeant Thorne »

While thinking on the subject of Descent today, I had an important realisation. Descent is the perfect alternative to all of these ground pounders that are so prevelant! Acts of violence in schools have become a big topic, and some people believe that violent computer games are at least partly to blame. I'm sure that all concerned with the subject of acts of violence in schools, and even those who are radically opposed to violent games of any sort as a possible contributing factor, would be forced to agree with me that even the most misguided youth would not be likely to bring a Pyro-GL to school. 8)

Thorne does have a point in that there has never been a drop of blood spilled in Descent. It's about the timeless joy of blowing stuff up, not violence, per se. :D

why would he want to fight you? because you could smoke him at descent? that seems like over-reacting, almost.

My term of endearment for Sandmann was Sander because he was an abrasive tool.

Yes, there is a BIG difference between satisfying your homocidal tendencies and satisfying your pyromaniacal tendencies. Plus if normal ground pounders supposedly improve your hand eye coordination, descent must do it ten fold!

I'm not sure about that...

To say it in 'groundpounders' terms.... Descent3 is quite 'spammy' in the sens that mos of the weapons you use are in fact sprayed at your opponent, not as much accurately aimed to hit each and every shot.

Also i think it's hard to argue that it is in fact harder to do a 180° spin and shoot 5 shock rifle shots in a pretty small, fast moving target, than to spin around 180° and carefully line up an MD shot...

So in terms of hand-eye coördination imo a good fast groundpounter (i.e. UT2k4/Quake3) got D3 beat. Those games are still *way* faster and requie tremendous precision to play well. (well that is if you're not a cheap rocket spammer who can't aim for ★■◆● :P )
Now in terms of spatial awareness D3 comes out on top, of course, with it's 6 degrees of freedom.

Descent is actually much harder on you then a standard ground pounder IMO. I can play Halo for hours even in game way over my skill level without tireing. But when I play Descent, even a "easy" game will wear me out after an hour or so. I can play D3 for 3-4 hours constantly without a break but after that much play when I leave I will be exausted and will crash and probably fall asleep for an hour. Descent requires more from you when you play it, so ground pounders just cant compete with the mental workout that you get from Descent. Nothing seems to match the intensity and pace of Descent.

mass murderers that are inspired by ground pounders are always the quiet Rambo watching nerds who snap and go rambo on everyone.

the mass murderers inspired by DESCENT are the quiet gymnatics students who snap and go ninja on everyone.

descent inspires kungfoo :D

Redbone said he was going to murder Suncho at Califest :D

Was that Redbone? I can't remember exactly. Sounds like something he'd do.

I thought the chair-throwing incident was when Sandy threw a chair at Scratch. Maybe that's a DIFFERENT chair-throwing incident ( )

Didn't The Rock and Sander mix it up at one LAN?

If anyone tried to beat me up at a lan game I'd just curl up on the floor and ★■◆● my pants...

But seriously. I don't think video games make those freaks kill people. They probably woulda done it anyways. The parents & school just want to have something else to blame it on rather than themselves.

the chair actually does not refer to sandmann.. it's an early d3 reference..... sandmann's reference from that era might have been a broken joystick though :o

bash, that was at the KC LAN, right next to the computer I'd borrowed from my dad for the weekend. I was really glad nobody started throwing punches.

I don't think Rock was involved initially -- I think Sandy was trying to mess with Scratch (I might be wrong about that), and DG tried to break them up. When Sandy grabbed DG's arm, rock stepped in the middle of it. I think that's when the rest of the room noticed and we all came over to break it up.

Like I said, the box for D3 is rated T and says "Animated Violence," so it depends on one's definition of "violence."

You all might as well stop calling FPS games "ground pounders" and drop the ego, cuz FPS's have always been the norm, and Descent is just a mere shadow. Doom III is coming out, and D3 is just fading, despite half-hearted efforts to "save D3." I'm not a fan of FPS games, but, as I said elsewhere, PC gaming begins and ends with Doom. =P

Didn't D1 pre-date the first Doom?

No, D1 came out after (or possibly at the same time as) Doom2.

"Sorry, kid, you've got the gift, but it looks like you" need to quit playing ground pounders. ;) "Ground Pounder" is just a fun term, for me, the ego implied is only feigned; I've played my share of First Person Shooters (mostly demos), but I still prefer Descent for these reasons: the gameplay beats all, IMO; you're not shooting at something that looks so much like another person, but a ship; 6 degrees of freedom; there is such a depth of skill that can be attained.

Well inside every Groundpounder there is a Descent Pilot waiting to be born! You can not argue that!

You have all seen them..... jumping, jumping, jumping all over the place... in an attempt to fly~!

LOL Thorne

heh Actually, I don't play too many "groundpounders." I've been playing D3 so much in the past several months or so that I keep trying to roll when I turn in FPS games. ;)

I think FPS games can be fun, but I prefer Descent...it's just that we won't get too many new players...that, and "Minerva Syndrome" forces me to play something else. =P
