Cable Mangement?

Post by []V[]essenjah »

My company has recently discovered, that we really need a decent cable management system. Any recommendations?

Network Cable or inside a server case cable?

Netwokring: Zip Ties work great. If you maintenance the cables often I recommend the Velcro type straps. I've done both and whichever you choose, it looks great. Also labeling/documenting ports/cables is \"Teh Win\".

Cases: Small type zip ties.

Yeah, cable management is spelled \"zip ties\", internal and external. You can also buy those Velcro strips that can be removed and reused instead of zip ties, but they are harder to find and more expensive.

Yeah, we have been using zip ties, but the kind-of suck. I prefer velcro myself. But, we are looking at something a that.... stands out a little less. Some way to sort of organize and hide the cables all at the same time. We are talking about this being done for professional companies. I'm an IT tech and I end up on-site a lot. Anyway, my boss asked me to watch out for something better than velcro.

We use a combination of zip ties, velcro strips, and sleeves at the radio station. You can imagine that audio paths require a lot of wiring. We're moving away from the zip ties completely because, as we're rewiring pars of the station this summer we've found cutting zip ties without damaging the shielding on the wires to be frustrating. Once we've got all the pairs logically velcroed up, then we'll typically bundle the trunk in a sleeve.

Use black zip ties then. Or whatever color your wires are. Coil your wiring and tie'em up.

If you look like this, hope might already be lost!

DCrazy: I would suggest in investing in some reusable zipties then. :P

Messenger: If zip ties don't already fit the bill, then use plastic twist tie clamps (though I would only recommend those for large bundles of wiring)

Still doesn't cover up the wires. :D

We just use velcro. Zip ties you can only use once and you can accidentally cut or strip the wires if you aren't careful. They are a bit of a pain to use. I like velcro a lot better if that is all we are talking about.

BTW, the wall behind my PC is starting to look a bit like that bottom picture. ;)

No. Reusable zipties actually have a release mechanism. (example) I've seen some that come with cordless drill battery rechargers where you zip it down snug, and then snap the thing into place. When you want to take it off, just unsnap it and unwrap the power cord.

If you are looking to hide cables wire fishing and conduit are the way to go. Or if you have tile ceiling you can usually punch up the tiles and run the cable through the rafters. To hide the cables run a wire drop and install a wall plate to the workstations/servers etc.
