A friend had his Sony Viao PCG-FX140 running Win ME worked on and they really messed it up.
He wants to transfer his data and re-install Windows but none of his ports work.
I'm thinking it's a driver problem so I found drivers at
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-li ... e=Original but not sure which one is for his USB ports.
If we can get those working we can download his data.
Also, don't see any \"?\" or \"!\" in Device Manager.

Go into the device manager and delete the USB hubs. Reboot and it will redetect them. This shuld fix any issues you have.
Why wouldn't you just copy the files accross his network to another PC?

BTW, that took you awhile to respond to my 1st post, almost 4 minutes. That's like personal service, I say.

How are you trying to copy the files? Does the laptop not have a CD Burner that you can burn them to CD with?
You should be able to remove all the USB stuff.

take the hard drive out, move it to another computer, then copy.
If you are going to copy data off a drive, don't dick around trying to get things working that don't.

Haven't had any time to see the computer yet but had him delete all the USB hubs, etc in the DM and reinstall. The USB ports still don't work.
I've taken a couple of laptop hd's out w/o any problem. Anything I should be aware of? You always hear \"only let a pro mess with a laptop hd\".

No, I'm asking if you tried forcing it to USB1.0 or 1.1 mode and see if that makes them work. Though I really doubt it would make a difference, still worth a try.

Now is this a USB host powered drive, AKA no power supply that goes with the drive. Because if it is I have seen that some laptops just don't supply enough power to power those things. Beyond that it does sound like its the drivers to me.

Finally got to look at his laptop and after going through all the regular stuff like BIOS, Device mgr....
I plugged in my memory stick and got a window that said it needed drivers.
When I went to look for Sys32 under Windows it wasn't there.
I found it on \"D\" drive.
The tech had evidently moved it or...I don't know what.
Anyway, I was able to \"browse\" a couple of times and find the files it was looking for.
First step done and it now sees his ext. hd so transferring files shouldn't be to heard.
Thanks again for the posts.
