i wonder if i can board a plane without ID in Australia....
i barely fly anyway it's too expensive, but i'm so curious now

Why are so many Americans so paranoid about government?
You need a driver's licence to operate a vehicle on public roadways so why not show it as ID? If you travel between countries you need proof of citizenship so why not show it as ID? Why all this freak out about having to prove who you are to some person representing a company who is charged with the responsibility of ensuring a benefit is collected by the person who owns it?
Some strange people down there. Reminds me of the fellow I met in a McDonald's in Butte Montana. The guy told me he cut out all those ID strips in the new style 20 dollar bills because with them the government could drive by his house and tell how much money he had.

Because it doesn't represent us and takes our money anyway?

Mabye you can't get drunk and kill someone by accident by being a passenger on a plane?
Ford Prefect wrote:If you travel between countries you need proof of citizenship so why not show it as ID?
Mabye they want to know who is coming to the country, such as Osama Bin Laden?

Mabye because you should be able to sit on an airplane assuming you don't have a bomb or weapon, regardless of who you may be?

Im out of smart ass remarks for today :P

To me the whole \"travel without papers\" thing comes from what i recall of the USSR.
They had to show papers to travel, it seemed to be a form of control.

i remember in Hunt for the Red October, Sam O'Neill as Ramius' first officer, who dreams of living in Montana and wonders if in the USA you can move freely, if the U.S. allows you to go from place to place without papers.

Because you couldn't do this in USSR.

A better question would be "Why are so many Americans so paranoid about insignificant 'Freedoms'"? So what if you have to bring a proof of identity with you everytime you want to take a trip to another country? In Europe, you always have to show your passport, which you must get beforehand, if you ever intend on flying abroad.

In fact, if you are actually serious about not having freedom, then you could find a non-contested island and claim it to be a country of your own! You become your own government them!
Seriously, you're actually aallowed to do that!

If you fly and don't have proof of who you are, who will they contact if you end up dead? No one will ever know if you died, or went missing.

Even IF there was a federal regulation that required all commercial air passengers to show some sort of official ID, that would still be totally different than the Nazi approach.

Just because you have to show ID doesn't mean you have to get permission from the government to fly.

Personally, I'd feel better about flying if I knew that everyone else on board DID have to show the ID. Seriously, who cares if they have to show their drivers license? Is that really such a big friggin deal if it adds a safety margin (granted, not a huge one) to ALL the passengers?

I know that this guy's trying to make a point on principle, but I think his tin foil's a little bit too tight.
