\"Death by Copyright\"

You probably thought that copyright law protected artists. It does sometimes. More and more however, it threatens artists' free expression, and everybody's free speech. Copyright is good to a point, however we are already well beyond that point and big corporations and governments with vested interests in controlling knowledge and culture are trying to take us even further.

Don't believe me? Come view this site and see for yourself.
Nice collection. Makes you wonder where this will lead to.

Edit: oh man, here's a good one. Got tattoos ? Better have the artist sign a release form..
When Rasheed Wallace, a celebrity Basketball player in the United States, started appearing in Nike commercials with his well known tattoos prominently featured, Mathew Reed, the Oregon tattoo artist who drew the pictures, took exception. He sued Nike and Wallace for copyright infringement. Similarly when British soccer star David Beckham ventured that he may pursue a promotional campaign featuring his body art, Louis Molloy, the artist who drew most of them, threatened to sue.

Oh dear lord no! Copyright laws are protecting people from taking credit, and profit, for other people's work! We must put a stop to this!

Seriously though, that site just seems to be about a guy that likes to complain a lot.

Maybe you'd like to have a look at Lawrence Lessig's stuff instead.

Well there is a push by old-publishers to restrict even Fair-Use.

Many cases like this where we'd all expect it to come under fair-use, but we're finding this challenged.

for instance, i consider the tattoo issue to be fair use.

Yes.
Well, TIGER, you're right, and your lucky that in the USA, (where I assume you are) 'fair use' rights exist. Up here in the Great White North they do not. Hence political parody and satire are not allowed. Technically even using a VCR violates copyright.

Add to this moral rights, and over reach of trademarks and you have significant issues with freedom of expression.

Now they are poised to make it even worse by imposing American style DMCA legislation too.

I'm not one to complain a lot, but on this issue, I think I have a lot to complain about. Have a good look at the site. Then comment.

Darryl Moore
