Can you use D2's Gauss cannon sounds for D3's Vauss?

Post by Tunnelcat »

I find that I like the sound of the Gauss cannon in D2 so much that I would like to know if you can replace the Vauss cannon sounds in D3 with the Gauss cannon sounds from D2?

The Vauss cannon in D3 sounds too wimpy to me. There's nothing like the deep, throaty and loud report of the Gauss cannon in my opinion. It just sounds nastier and is my favorite weapon of choice.

They used it for the Inferno mod.

Ooooooh, sounds fun, I'll give that one a try. But I'd still like to know if you can modify an installed copy of D3 to use a D2 sound effect. :?

Easy. First get your hands on the original D2 wav sound file for the Gauss. Now rename it so it matches the name of the D3 Vauss firing sound (\"MicrowaveSQ.wav\") and put it into the folder where Descent 3 is installed (C:\\Games\\Descent3 by default) and it should work.

well yeah, it just been a while since I looked at the files and it just seems really weird to name a file \"microwave\" when it's being applied to the vauss.

*shrug*
I'll go open up the hog now.

btw, Hogsview32 is one of the coolest tools in the community. ^^
\"Gaussnew.wav\" is in there already and it's the old D2 guass sound.

I'm a noob when it comes to modifying Descent, so the help is appreciated. Thanks for the name of the .wav file to change, but where can you get a copy of Hogsview32? I'm guessing that I need it to look at the embedded .wav files in both versions of Descent.

Easiest method would be for you to save this wav file in your Games\\Descent3\\ folder: http://krom.sploitz.com/temp/MicrowaveSQ.wav

Vauss sound files:

WpnVaussSidefireK.wav
WpnVauseSfRelease.wav
WpnVauseHitRicB.wav
WpnVauseHitRicA.wav

I have no place to host them. These are the ones that I found in the hog.

Hogview32 can be downloaded HERE *right click and \"Save As\"*

It's pretty straight forward. As Krom posted a little earlier, point it to the d3.hog. If you want to do much modding, this is a MUST tool. Go to the sound files and use the \"Extract\" icon in the upper left. It's an arrow with a little black diskette.

Krom, you just put this file in the top level Descent 3 folder? Not in any subfolder? I don't see any other .wav files.

Correct, when D3 finds a file in its root directory of the same name as a file packed inside one of the hogs, it will use the file in the root directory.

Thanks Krom, I got the file from your link. It sounds like the Gauss Cannon I love. Will install it as you suggested and try it out in D3.

Krom, I tried it out as you suggested, installing your MicrowaveSQ.wav file into the top level directory of D3. Unfortunately I can't hear the sound in D3, even though I can play the sound outside of the game. Any suggestions on what may be wrong?

I just tried it out myself, you can hear it but it is extremely quiet. Try replacing one of the other sounds with it instead, rename it to WpnVaussSidefireK.wav.
